.spn 6.06: or, truthiness will set you free

When she came to visit me a couple weeks ago, trinityofone ended up spending roughly seven consecutive days being allergic to New England. Well, now it's my turn. I went up to Freeport today to winterize myself (more fleece! more wool socks! long underwear!) and sounded like the person who is Patient Zero in movies like The Stand or Hot Zone, whose snufflings ( Read more... )

I think the truth Dean was speaking was subjective. Dean believes that he can't have a normal life, a family, because all he's ever been good at is hunting, killing, being destructive. From an outside perspective, without Sam there, Dean WAS getting better. Perhaps he was living a half-life, but he was making a real go at the normal life and getting better at it. True, as long as Sammy's around, the need to hunt by his side is going to be too much for Dean to ignore. And evil will not simply leave him alone, so he has to be on the defense at all times. But I want to believe that, when it comes down to it, he could be a good father, a good partner, a good man who exists in a world outside of hunting.

Yeah, that's what I think too. And, we've seen evidence of that, haven't we? Lisa's said that she thinks Dean is great with Ben, and we do see him being a generally good role model, say, when he tells Ben to man up and tell his mom the truth. You're totally right to say that evil won't leave him alone, and I think his reaction to that is something he reads not as a reaction to the fact that really terrible shit is out for him all the time, but as something intrinsically wrong with him, that somehow disqualifies him from what he wants.

Poor Dean :(

I have a tendency to think that truth is always subjective unless you're dealing with cold, hard facts. Everything else is shaped through a perception filter, and Dean and Sam's relationship is no exception ( ... )

Yeah, I think so too. And with Dean as relentlessly negative as he is when it comes to self-assessment... it would make sense that Veritas encourages that as truth, seeing as she wants him dead.

Lisa definitely did sound reasonable, you're right, and I know I wouldn't really want a guy (even a guy I otherwise love) around my kid if he shoved my kid--and scared the hell out of me--and wasn't going to try to explain why he did it. I mean, I don't recall Dean trying to tell her about being turned into a vampire and going back to say goodbye because he thought he was going to be dead in a few hours. I imagine that fueled a lot of the rage behind Dean attacking Sam at the end--because, while it totally sucks to have had Sam set him up like that, Lisa and Ben were almost collateral damage. They are collateral damage, in a way.

He repeats that here, and Dean's not getting it. Cas already told him that he didn't have any information to share and that if he did, he would, and Dean's not getting why Cas can't just come and tell him that. ( ... )

I just fucking hated how they ended things with Lisa (and Ben). I am one of those who liked that Dean had somewhere to go to that isn't about hunting and demons and whatever. They couldn't even leve him that, just so we can go merrily on our way riding the dysfunctional ship that is Dean&Sam.

p.s. Bobby watches Tori & Dean. \o/

I knowwww. For a moment I thought "Maybe this whole thing with Sam which will be revealed next week will eventually be the thing that helps make them less dysfunctional and awful to be together." But then I realized that they've had at least twenty of these opportunities before, and they haven't changed. So further change is kind of unlikely.

But BOBBEH. Tori and Dean! Pedicures! <33333

*waits patiently for fic that incorporates this episode*

Also someone else's post ep review had an interesting idea, that not only was Dean erm... expressing his rage (because holy shit you gotta trust your partner has your best interests at heart, mostly) but that right after the scene went black, he probably ties Sam up and takes him someplace he can control to knock the trust out of him figure out what to do next and probably call in reinforcements. So go Dean for multitasking even at the worst of times! (also OMG DEAN's I am totally not crying, I don 't see any wet shining eyes, what are you talking about? face makes me heart clench!)

Admittedly, I did have a hilarious side-thought about Dean trying to use Veritas' truth-telling powers to get some kind of amusing confession out of Cas. But probably Cas's awesome angel powers prevent that from happening.

he probably ties Sam up and takes him someplace he can control to knock the trust out of him figure out what to do next and probably call in reinforcements.

Oh, he totally does, I bet they're right! Dean's been pretty good about getting Sam into lockdown before; see 4.20, when he gets Sam back to Bobby's and drops him in the safe room. I bet we'll be seeing that safe room make another appearance next week.
