.spn 6.09: or, I *want* to believe...

Nov 19, 2010 22:45

Yeah, another stupid week. Honestly, I am fucking fed up at this point, with myself and with about 99.99999% of the world. Just fucking sign me out already.

... that Cas will be in more than 40% of the goddamn episodes )

spn:yay!

Alas, I was late getting home and missed the first 15 minutes, but I had already seen the credits courtesy of io9.com.

DEAN NUKED TINKERBELL OMFG. Also, "...nipples?"

On the downside, the "Fight the fairies!" bit had me cringing in the promo, and it didn't play any better in context.

Finally, Robert Picardo, YAY! And he's not dead, just sent back to Fairyland, so maybe we'll see more of the Fae! There's fairy lore that the show could play with, like the teind, and the belief that some of the Fair Folk are angels who stayed neutral during the war in Heaven, or fell but did not land in Hell...

Dean's face there was the best. He does simultaneous surprise/horror/puzzlement so well.

As I said in my review, having Robert Picardo on my screen was like the highlight of my week. I hope he shows up again, and that we get a bit more mythology about the fae and how it is they can get around the power of Heaven and Hell. I actually think that's really interesting and cool, and a bit of redress for the fail of 5.18, that angels and demons aren't indisputably at the top of the food chain, so to speak.

Jensen Ackles: King of Whatthefuckistan. See also his reappearance in the cornfield mid-freakout.

Oh man, we can haz angel versus fae throwdown, y/y? Here's hoping the leprechaun (I keep wanting to call him Lucky, but people might think I meant the Loneliest Skinwalker) and Balthazar the Angelic Arms Dealer have roles to play in a hypothetical Cas-heavy storyline about the power struggle in Heaven. Ooh, and maybe Kali could come back, kick a little angel butt? Perhaps a newly vesseled Raphael's?

Yeah. SRLY.
*misses Cas like Dean misses Sammy's little soul*

I just... I think what enrages me the most about this show is that they have proven they are capable of writing incredibly layered, well-thought-out episodes with everything they entail (character development, funny jokes/banter, even exposition done interestingly) and still, most of the time, it feels as if they are half-assing it.
I mean, I would even take mediocre episodes over half-awesome-half-shitty-and-insulting episodes ANY DAY.

On balance, I think this was more like 95-5 good/shitty, in terms of time onscreen. It's just when there's a lapse in judgment, it's SO BAD. Ben Edlund's a much better writer than having Dean wrestle with a little person.

Just a little comment about Misha not being much in the season to date - I am sure I saw somewhere that he has pretty much been given time off with new bub and his storyline will be heavily pursued in the second half of the season. Maybe that's wishful thinking on someone's part, and I'm sorry I can't give you a source, but there it is, FWIW.

*hugs!* I actually went back and looked at my review this morning, and I was all "Oh my god, aesc, you turned into the raging, frothing fangirl you never wanted to be. You turned into the raging, frothing fangirl you make fun of." The past couple of months have been super-stressful--I'm applying for work for next year, and in my particular field applying for work means spending three or four (or five) months slowly having your self-esteem and confidence eroded into nothingness, and people who I kind of need to support me haven't been terribly trustworthy. So last night, I ended up descending into a sneaky hate spiral, and my review ended up being the distillation of a process like this:

'I'm still at a loss to explain why they didn't run with that same approach with Cas in S5, even as something to provide some goddamn variety to spice up the perpetual menu of Dean And Sam's Co-Dependent Adventure.'
My guess the writers (especially Sera) have gotten so use to writing just for Sam and Dean that they don't know what to do with/how to write Cas; the two exceptions are/were Carver and Edlund. Plus Sera has said she doesn't like the angel storyline. I know this is a horrible thing to say, but if Cas is going to continue being there just for fan service and not because the writers are going to do anything with him, I wish they'd just write him out of the show and be done with it. I like his character too much to see the writers continue to do a half-ass job of writing him, although knowing them they probably think they're using their whole asses.

I don't know if I'd want him written out, considering what "written out" usually means. I'd just like to have them not put him in their seasonal promotional materials and bill him as a regular character. Just call him a guest star. It worked fine in S4.

Not thinking about it anymore.

True.

True. I'm guessing the writers want his fans, but for whatever reason don't know what to actually do with him. It's kind of funny that he got more storyline/character development in when he was a guest star in season four than he has being a regular in seasons five and six.

I couldn't help but think that not calling Cas was just a poor use of resources on the Winchesters' part. Yeah, sure, it might have made the episode about 20 minutes long, but I feel like an angel probably would have been able to address the aliens question in the form of a yes/no answer. Done.

It was very sneaky, though, how they slipped MC's name into the credits. I saw that, and then there was one shot where the camera was kind of angled over Dean's shoulder, which they always seem to do when Cas is about to appear behind him (heh), that I actually yelled out loud, "CAAAAAS?" But, nothing... Until next week, at least, and I have to admit that I'm a little apprehensive of how they're going to make me watch any Meg/Cas bullcrap without wanting to vomit.

I'm kind of on the fence as to whether the lack of Cas appearances is a bad thing, though, beyond generally wanting to see more of Misha. architeuthis made a pretty good point a couple weeks back, that in some ways his appearances are appreciated more when he arrives to serve a purpose, rather ( ... )

Oh man, Skinner! Having Mitch Pileggi show up would have been perfection. Then again, I was almost dying with laughter when "Ashes to Ashes" started playing.

I couldn't agree more. I hate when Cas is plopped into episodes (I think Song Remains the Same is the worst example of that) because like I always say he's an angel not a pudding cup, he shouldn't plop.

Although that's not to say that he wouldn't make an absolutely charming pudding cup.

'Pudding Cup of the Lord' sort of has a ring to it, dontcha think? I like my men like I like my pudding, dark and... with a spoon in them.
