Charlotte never wanted to spend another minute in a hospital. She'd had the good sense to bring a book when she took John to his battery of tests in Harlem, but even during those few times she was alone, she did no more than stare at the title page. He glared at her for a little bit after she told him, then he heard the monsters in a bag in the back seat. He glanced at her, then reached back and pulled the bag into his lap.

Before he opened the bag, he rested his hands on it, warning the monsters. Then he opened the bag and got them both on his lap. Once they settled, he closed his eyes and dozed off again.

One of the nicest thing about her power was that she could caress him and the kittens without ever taking her hands off the wheel. She touched his cheek as he slept and rubbed behind Viv's ears.

She wasn't used to being this impulsive. The plan had come to her when she realized how long it would be before they got answers from that day's tests. They couldn't sit around and wait. It would drive her crazy, for one thing, but it would also put them both in danger.

She sighed deeply and wished for the bed in his house.

Her touch kept him from going too deeply to sleep, which was actually a good thing. If he had, he'd have woken up with a headache and confused. One was fine, both were not.

So as she touched him, he pet the monsters. He could tell she was doing it, too. There was a time, recently, when it had unnerved him, her touching things without touching them. Now, though, he'd come to accept and appreciate it, but that he could tell her that.

Because she didn't want to stop if they didn't have to, she took them through a drive through, getting coffee for herself and chicken bits for the cats, in addition to what he wanted. She was on edge just from slowing, constantly looking in her mirrors to see if they were being followed.

She didn't think there really was anyone, or not anyone more than had been, but she couldn't shake the feeling. It had been years since she felt the need to check a rear view mirror that way. She didn't like the feeling at all.
