Similar to walking, have you considered jogging? As I recall, you expend something like twice the energy, which means you need only half the time. Roughly.
That's a good thught. At present jogging makes me run out of breath long, long before I run out of energy, but maybe starting small and working up would be worth trying.
On the hillwalking, there's a fairly well organised group of hikers in dublin who do trips out to the wicklow mountains almost every weekend, and organise buses from the city out to starting points like glendalough or roundwood. I don't have the details but they're quite often mentioned in the Saturday travel section of the Irish Times with their plan for Sunday. Obviously not an everyday solution, but it could be good for weekends? ...or you could just move to Slovenia. Everyone hikes here, all the time.
