One minute he's at a party, making small talk with a stranger; the next he's letting himself be dragged into an empty room and pushed against the wall.
Then there's an amused-sounding voice, hot and urgent in his ear, "So, legendary warrior, let's see if your skills extend to other arenas," and -
A few minutes later, as things are really starting to get interesting, Hephaestion has to admit this man has a few skills himself.
"Congratulations," cries Mat, bounding over as the after party gets into full swing, and flings his arms around Darren - partly to hug him, partly to steady his own drunken swaying.
"Congratulations yourself," says Darren, holding him tight, only slightly less wobbly.
They grin at each other in silence for a few moments, and then Darren has to laugh when Mat leans in to whisper, "Do you think we can escape the interviewers long enough to have a private celebration?"
His boss was a nightmare all day; the crowded train home was an hour late; the rain was pouring down as he walked back from the station - and he'd forgotten his umbrella.
By the time he gets in, Richard is cold and tired and hungry - but when he walks into the living room and sees the way his boyfriends' faces light up, he already feels better, even before John pulls him down onto the sofa and George goes to get his dinner out of the oven.
And when he's got a plate of warm food on his lap, and he's being snuggled from both directions by the two wonderful men on either side of him, he's still cold and tired and only marginally less hungry - but somehow everything seems perfect.
"I'm trying to work," James hisses as he's dragged into the post office's back room.
"I know, and I've come to distract you from all those boring customers," Dick says, grinning, and pushes him against the wall -
Later, when he's trying to hide the marks now blossoming on his neck so those boring customers can't see them, James has to admit that Dick did exactly what he set out to do.

"Vanity is sinful," growls Cromwell. "Now may I please put on some clothes, your Majesty?"
