Ah, yes... how could I neglect to mention the tortoise-shell beauty known as Cattarina? And although he took poetic license in reference to superstitions of black cats as witches, Poe was no doubt inspired by Cattarina to write his essay, "Instinct vs. Reason -- A Black Cat (1843)," as well as the short story, "The Black Cat (1843)" (for further interpretations of this story, see The Poe Decoder).
