in my own experience, after my second girlfriend killed herself, our relationship continued in my dreams in a recurrent and developing dream narrative for many years... until i finally learned the skills of lucid dreaming & released her... on the subject of conscious dreaming, I highly recommend the work of Sirley Marques Bonham
for me, there were many correlations with sleep paralysis, night terrors, etc. but simply put... it seems that those who have passed away are often found in the inbetween states of hypnogogic & hypnopompic dream... for our safety, the limbic system shuts down when we are asleep (unless you're a somnambulist?), but sometimes parts of our conscious mind wakes up before we're able to move, which can produce some curious effects... fear, eroticism, aliens, lost loved ones, trauma, passion, you name it!... that thalamus is exciting when stimulated, isn't it?
now, if you'll pardon me, i think my pineal gland needs some exercise... i think i'll go for a little astral projection... perhaps i'll see you on the other
