"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away."
-- _How to Build a Universe That Doesn't Fall Apart Two Days Later,_ by Philip K. Dick, 1978

earlier tonight at mojo's, i helped to instigate a conversation in which we were discussing (among other things) philip k. dick's 1974 beam of "pink light" VALIS-experience in terms ( Read more... )

i tend to judge people by the merit of their work, and attempt to understand their experiences from their own perspective (i.e. by walking aroung in their shoes for a while...I think many people get lost on that idea and get caught up in the trappings of their own fears and hesitations. The individual experience is the only one that matters, because we are all so different from each other. "Scholars" (or those that call themselves that) can argue till the end of time (and many do), but if I know in my heart of hearts that I "acheived knowledge and conversation of my holy guardian angel", it matters not what anyone else believes because they are not me (within the context of individual experience) and were not there to witness ( ... )

The individual experience is the only one that matters, because we are all so different from each other.

ultimately, i agree with your statement.
i think that sometimes, i talk about a similar idea in terms of "integrity."
but i also think that it is important to take into consideration the perspectives of others, in a relativistic sense...

i believe that "there is safety in a multitude of counsel;" but only if one uses that idea to take a brief yet crucial survey with trusted advisors (and perhaps takes a little time to interpret some statistical data), and then one takes the responsibility to make a definite decision based on that information.

I am busy experiencing things for myself ... Walk in the shoes, don't talk about them.

more power to you, my friend -- keep up The Great Work!

People who follow religion, talk about the path. People who live their religion, walk the path. And they need not explain themselves or prove the validity of what is in their hearts.yes, and i am tempted to believe that people who understand this ( ... )

I'm not sure if you will find this relevant to your post........
I see the world in many different ways, and I have always tried to see things from others points of view....walking a mile in another's moccasins, I do my best to be compassionate and understanding. Lately I have found that to be slightly more difficult with some people...I have had times in my life were the only thing keeping me going was sheer adrenaline. The world is a strange, beautiful, & dangerous place to be.....but we are all in this together whether we know it or not.
Love and hope to all creatures great and small.

i always find appreciation relative to my posts!
thank you for making the effort to share your feelings with me.
i'm sure that my complexity can be difficult to decode sometimes...
uncertainty is the root of information itself -- the very surprise of an unpredictable message makes it worth communicating -- but i am correspondingly certain that we will continue to improve signal to noise ratio...

Valis bibliomancy:

"If you'll remember, helping people was one of the two things Fats was told to give up; helping people and taking dope. He had stopped taking dope, but all his energy and enthusiasm were now totally channeled into saving people.

"Better he had kept on with the dope."
Last two paragraphs of Chapter Five.

"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away."

In reality...I think no one loves...and I need it so badly to live. It's killing me. So strong yet so fragile. Reality bites sometimes....when is this "reality" going to be over?

i believe that you have noticed by now that there is a cycle to all of this...

I really seem to have a problem with depression on occasion....I'm working on it as I always have. Some days are easier than others; but I think we all have bad and good days.

Forgot to add this tidbit which I hoped buddhalotus would appreciate. It is from one of my favorite plays of all time.

"The greatest madness is to see life as it is and not as it should be." -- Don Quiote (from Man of La Mancha)

Really a lot of good quotes in that one.

"If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite." -- William Blake

sort of lovecraftian, really...
