I need some advil

I'm sitting in econ class. I don't want to be here. It's boring as heck. I keep thinking, why didn't I stay in bed? I woke up in the middle of the night with a huge sore throat, so I'd love to still be lying in bed. Can't we just rewind time a little and make it Saturday again? In econ we're learning about probabilities and how I'll be a useful ( Read more... )

coming from the only experience I can offer, I have a pomeranian. he's tiny and really cute (in my opinion at least) but very barky. it's part of the breed. usually he only barks when someone's outside or if people are coming or going, but they're kind of tiny alert/guard dogs by nature, hence the barking. he's a good dog.
my sister has a shih tzu and she's the most docile and friendly dog I've ever seen. this one is dumb as a box of rocks, but if you're looking for companionship, she is the sweetest little doggie.

You should adopt this bloodhound mix from the SPCA here.
It's a big dog but he's really mellow and super sweet. :) He doesn't bark when all the other dogs do.
Buuuut... does he want a big dog, a small dog, a medium dog? A mellow one or one with lots of energy? :D

That actually sounds like a good dog. He wants a medium to large dog. Originally he wanted a rotweiler, but his future roommates say no because they believe rotweilers to be the devil's spawn. I think they're dumb for thinking that, because it's not the dog that's bad, it's the owner that trained them. We're thinking it would be a good idea to get a mellow dog, one that won't necessarily start chewing on things, but on that will still play. The fact that he doesn't bark when all the others do sounds wonderful.

ANNNDD, we actually did look at the SPCA in Colrain. I used to volunteer at the shelters there, so I knew the processes involved and really liked them. Alisha mentioned you volunteer at a shelter. Which one do you go to?

I completely agree about a dog not being bad, it's just the owner. Unfortunately a lot of people are not good owners and that's why there's so many dogs at the SPCA :(
I volunteer at the Colerain SPCA. It makes you want to take home all the dogs, doesn't it? Haha. They're all so great.
That's awesome your boyfriend is doing a lot of research though, hopefully he finds that one lucky dog!

I agree. I always want to take home all the doggies whenever I go there. We may end up getting a dog from the Colerain SPCA, so I'll let you know if that's what we decide we're going to do.

I think small dogs with a high pitched bark are annoying.

because they are.

if a dog's going to bark, it might as well be a useful intimidating bark. Jen's right, the bark is very useful to know when someone's approaching your house. And they really do turn people away from harassing your home. We've seen it in action. So that's useful. What's not useful? -They take up a whole bunch of space and eat LOTS of food. Plus, one last huge thing to consider is how much time you're going to be spending at home rather than how much time you're going to be out. Dogs are not like cats and need lots and lots of love and attention. And maybe this summer break you'll have lots of free time, but next quarter will start up for Austin and free time is hard to find during the school year.

MY VOTE IS A SAINT BERNARD!

Yay for shaggy shedding hair and gross slobber! :D

*correction. small dogs eat little food and take up little space along with leaving little poopies. and my sister's shih tzu has a deceptively deep bark (that she only uses rarely).

lol that's what I said. I agreed with you (Jen) that their bark was useful. And then went on to my own thoughts. I was saying the not useful parts of a big dog is that they eat lots of food and yes, they definitely take BIG POOPIES. :( lol but I've always been partial to big dogs.

AND KATIE YOU BETTER NOT BE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLES (if you get a big doggie, or even a little doggie I guess) WHO LEAVES THEIR POOPIES BEHIND WHEN YOU TAKE THEM FOR A WALK!!

Cause that's mean and gross.

Oh wow, trust me, we've thought about all of your concerns. My roommate, Matt, was horrible about taking care of his dog and saw the neglect that came with it, so trust me, we don't want that. We probably won't end up getting a saint bernard, because of their long hair and tendency to drool. They're completely adorable, but we're thinking more husky, boxer, any random medium/large sized dog. Austin's done a lot of research on types of dogs to determine which temperment will be best. For example, an independent dog that's not going to start chewing on things because it's bored.

so I was telling my dad how I wanted to get a dog when I one day move out but how I was conflicted because I'll be working and won't be home much so I was like well what if I get him a cat friend to play with. but really that won't work cause cats are independent, I just wanted a cat. so he was like why do you just get two dogs and I was like brilliant! because then they can be friends while I'm away and I like having two doggies... even when everyone's home ours play together and I think getting another dog for cody to play with was a good idea. so I don't know if the thought of two dogs crossed your/his mind. it would definitely be more expensive, but I know with us having the small dogs it's not awful you know. but you've been saying he wants a big dog so this may all be completely irrelevant.

Those are good points. I'm hoping whatever dog he gets will get along with Sebastian, because Sebastian is essentially a dog. He plays fetch, chews on dog bones, etc. He loves Alicia's dog, Lux, and always wants to play with her whenever she comes over. I'm honestly thinking that if this relationship goes anywhere, we'll probably end up getting another dog. But we do want to get a dog, because we won't have to go through the messy puppy stages, although I do love puppies.

I can't imagine getting a dog when it's older than a puppy. I think that's the inital "falling in love" stage and I could never ever dream of missing it. aw, they're so cute.
