Sex and the SCSU

I agree with you all points about the fashion show. I didn't go and I am glad. I love fashion for its artistic integrity and its sensuality. This fashion show seemed centered around sex, wearing clothes to be more desirable to the opposite sex. But clothes can't make a person sensual or happy. Clothes rather are the reflection of those qualities. And you are right, in the last week I have been to a lecture on Gaza and a christian concert night at UTSC no SCSU pubs, fashion shows because yes those things do not appeal to me as a)an intellectual (the point of school I believe b) an activist. Thanks Gill for putting it out there!! I am with you. Liz

you'd think we'd have more intellectual events in, you know, a university and all. who knew it was about...wait, those movies warned me that it's all about sex and alcohol. i should have listened to the media.
thanks liz. did [insert person here] reply about you kicking him in the balls for this avatar?
That is surprising. When I think fashion show, I don't think sex show. I definitely think emphasis on clothes, not emphasis on skin. I had no idea it was like that.
You are definitely right about student ambivalence towards the SCSU. Just the other day a journalism friend of mine -- who is smart, really well-read, and knows about alot of things - admitted that he didn't even know where to find the "SSCU" (that's not a typo).
As usual I am impressed by the way you stick to your convictions while also having the guts to make them heard.
do you really think clothes and not skin for a fashion show? the fashion industry, even if it isn't directly based on sex, is indirectly dependent on it. why else do models have to be tall and size 2? if it was about the clothes we wouldn't care what they looked like.
I'm tempted to link this to the SCSU forums, but I won't.. because then people will discover a whole slew of livejournals and that won't be nice
( ... )
i was tempted to post on the forums, too...but i decided that there would be more contoversy surrounding ME than the issue, so i refrained. besides, i think for the culture within the scsu the fashion show was well put on. and i don't want to point fingers at any particular people about changing that, because it takes a hell of a lot to do that. the forum tends to be all about the finger pointing.
ya i'd just like to voice the fact that i agree with you as well.
gillian, it's a real shame that you won't be around for the full year next year or that you've found some things so frustrating with the women's centre, because your opinions+women's centre resources = good potential for change.
thanks. i think i've done all i can with the women's centre at this point...i don't want it to be 'the gillian organization', so it's time for me to move on. but i still will find my way to do the anti-oppression/equity/feminism thing.
