I finished Catcher in the Rye. I can see why people empathize with Holden, but I think it's more that such people play out their iconoclastic and emo fantasies *through* him, rather than really empathizing *with* him. Honestly, Holden as a character and a person really needs help -- he's fixated on childhood and innocence, has no drive, is less ( Read more... )

AGREED. TO THE MAX. I don't think Salinger wrote Holden to be anybody's hero at all, but somehow he's become one. Some people think that Salinger is commenting on the "phoniness" of society, and how Holden is determined to break away from that, and I'm sure that Salinger does make some interesting observations (through Holden) but for me, it's so much more about the... terrible CHILDISHNESS of Holden and his inability to understand or empathize with anyone.

Though, in spite of the fact that I really just want to hit him sometimes, I do sympathize with Holden. Deep down, he's really just this scared, confused little boy... I don't truly blame him for his short-sightedness.
