Neal was pliant under the hand holding his arm twisted behind his back, not resisting, but not laughing and joking with him either. He wasn’t a fan of violence, always picked flight over fight, so all Peter had to do was corner him and that was that.

But trapped people are irrational and Neal Caffrey was not exception. It’s said the most dangerous time during an arrest is right after handcuffing the first wrist.

Peter clicked the handcuff into place, talking to Neal like a friend- an older, wiser friend- the second Peter made to put the second handcuff on him, Neal thrashed. Gravel crunched beneath him. Peter saw it in slow motion, saw Neal wrench out of his grip and push off to his feet.

Peter sprang after him and launched at Neal. The second Neal heard him, he lunged and twisted, but Peter still caught him around the waist and they went down, skidding through the gravel. “Caffrey, don’t do this! Resisting arrest isn’t going to do you any good.”

Neal struggled and panted and squirmed, freeing limbs as fast Peter could catch them. The handcuff on one wrist flew wildly about, hitting Neal’s shoulder, Peter’s face, Neal’s hip. Neal managed to get his feet under him a couple of times, but Peter pulled them out from under him, pulling him down before reaching for Neal’s arms again.

“Damn it, Caffrey! Hold. Still!”

Neal slid through his hands to a crouch. Mid-spring, Peter’s hand caught Neal’s back and slammed him into a wall. He took a second to catch his breath and debate apologizing for scraping Neal’s face along the concrete. Neal grimaced. “Your own fault,” Peter said matter-of-factly as he tugged Neal’s arms behind him and snapped the second handcuff on.

Neal nodded, slouching against the wall, the fight going out of him. Peter patted his shoulder before pulling him away and leading him to the squad car.
