So Craig talked me into trying online role-play. Nooo, not the “adult” kind! - this is an online community that hosts message boards where people play fantasy games, science fiction games, even Pokemon games …

He plays a “g-d game” in which the players are g-ds or goddesses, ruling a realm of people. I would sometimes ask him how the game was going

Don't think all GM/DMs are like that. I don't have a hell of a lot of experience, but my guy RPs tabletop fairly often. It's all about finding a group you like, and even then there will be sucky times. Cest la vie.

Would you and your honey wants to try out a live action RP in Vancouver? I'm a fairly normal gal, but I love this group, it's a lot of fun. The people make it for me, they are so nice! I am not so into RPing, so I help out being random bad guys. 'Tis fun, and super social.

Anyway, sorry to hear about your bad experience. I hope you'll try again somewhere else.

Craig is really into D&D, but he's not a tabletop/action figure kind of guy. What kind of games is your group into?

I've been meaning to comment on this for ages and not getting round to it. I feel your pain, not exactly being wildly into the roleplaying myself but also having a boyfriend whose very into it. But it does sound like that was a particularly shitty GM and I hope you don't feel that it was anything to do with you or that roleplaying is not something you'll ever want to try again.

This is probably going to sound really arrogant but I always find roleplaying is like having somebody yanking on my imagination, which is a delicate instrument and doesn't respond well to such treatment =P

Now that my hectic grad school schedule is kicking my ass again this term, it's probably for the best anyway. But no, I will try it again at some point. I've asked Craig if he'd be willing to run a one-shot roleplay for me sometime, in person - either just he and me, or a group of people if I can find others interested. He said yes. :) So that might be a good first try; I won't get so frustrated at nothing happening, and I know Craig won't stonewall me. I'd kick him. :P
