December 2006
This is my mother's side of the family, almost entirely of German descent and Lutheran. Latvian mixed in throughout from my aunt's first marriage. My Popop was the first of this line to actually be born in America. He learned English in school and then came home to teach his parents, but his mother, my Oma, still spoke German until the day she died. In fact, she often spoke German to her nurses so that she wouldn't have to deal with them. My mother says I am very much like Oma, but I look like my father's side of the family, which was predominantly Portuguese and Catholic, although few are religious anymore.
Bloodlines fascinate me. Not because they offer coincidences, but because they trace evolutions and movement.
These photos don't share very much, or maybe they share a lot.
It depends.
Either way, this Christmas was particularly interesting because there were new faces around. Young, round faces with pink cheeks and pouty lips. They will say something if nothing else does.
