Character
Name: Yue
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Gender: Female
Age: 16
Time Period: Right after Sokka introduces her to Appa.
Wing Color: White
History: Yue’s page on the ATLA wiki.

Personality: Yue is the princess of the Northern Water Tribe, and acts as such. She is graceful, composed, and holds herself in a dignified manner. She's usually very polite and makes a point to treat almost everyone she meets with a degree of respect and friendliness. Yue also has a relatively serious demeanour. She isn't apathetic or stoic by any means, as she's a fairly emotional person, although she usually manages to to keep a straight face and a relatively cool head.

However, Yue is still an emotional young woman, and it isn't terribly unusual for that to shine through. (Especially if she's around Sokka.) The most prominent would be whenever Yue experiences negative emotions such as sadness, anger, or guilt, and it isn't difficult for these feelings to sway her behaviour and actions. Also, while it is shown much less often, Princess Yue appears to have something of an impulsive and playful side to her. Her impulsive side became obvious when she first kissed Sokka. However, Yue's playful behaviour was shown to be much more subtle and underhanded when she briefly flirted with Sokka during their ride on Appa.

Yue is also quite sheltered, and while she is not naive in regards to what is going on in the world, she is not knowledgeable, either. Due to the nature of the environment surrounding the Northern Water Tribe, they have been isolated from the rest of the world and free from Fire Nation attacks for the past 100 years. This, combined with the fact she has never left her homeland, has resulted in Yue living a rather sheltered life. Due to this, Yue has developed a certain curiosity in regards to the world outside of her tribe. When faced with someone not from the Northern Water Tribe (such as when Team Avatar first arrived), Yue will occasionally ask for details about their home and the places they've been, and will listen with great interest whenever they tell stories of their travels.

Yue is also fairly spiritual. She frequently talks about the spirits of the moon and ocean, although she doesn't quite understand many of the details of spirits and the nature of the spirit world. (As seen when she asked Katara what Aang was doing while he tried to cross over to the spirit world.) Even so, it is likely that Yue's spirituality and interest in spirits stems from the moon spirit saving her life when she was a baby, which established a connection between her and the moon.

Besides that, Princess Yue is very caring and compassionate. While it is possible for one to become spoiled and apathetic after living all their life in the lap of luxury, such has not happened to her. Yue is an incredibly caring individual, and has a great deal of love and respect for her tribe and its people. She puts their wants and needs above her own, and as the princess of her tribe, Yue has a strong influence over them and does everything in her power to make sure they are content. Of course, Yue's care doesn't only extend to her people. She has a great deal of compassion for the world she lives in, and regardless of what happened, she would do anything she could to ensure its safety.

Strengths:
Yue has an incredibly strong sense of duty. As princess of the Northern Water Tribe, there are certain duties that she is expected to fulfill. Due to these standards, Yue always works to try and fulfill them to the best of her abilities so she may live up to the expectations of her people. The clearest example would be her engagement to Hahn; it is Yue's duty as princess to marry him, regardless of how she actually feels. Even after she developed feelings for Sokka, Yue continuously insisted that they could not be together because she was already engaged. There were times when she wavered and questioned herself, but she frequently reminded both Sokka and herself that this was her duty as a princess and to her people.

Not only that, but she is fiercely determined in regards to keeping the people of her tribe safe. Yue was not raised to be a fighter, but she will always do what she can if it means she can help protect people and bring things back to the way they were. She showcased this bravery and determination when she sacrificed herself after General Zhao had killed the moon spirit. Yue knew that she would die in the process, but she also knew that the moon spirit was needed in order to restore balance, and that the only way it could be brought back was if she gave it her own life. (Although, Yue will be brought from before this point.)

Weaknesses:
A certain amount of Yue's weakness lies in the fact that she is not a fighter. Having been raised as the princess of her tribe, Yue's duty has always been to do what was best for her people rather than learning how to fight. Besides that, the Northern Water Tribe is a patriarchal society, and most roles are assigned based on gender. Men would lead the tribe and work as hunters and warriors (and would be able to use waterbending to fight), whereas women are usually expected to be home makers or healers. (Healing being the only kind of waterbending a woman would be allowed to learn.) Due to these traditions, Yue does not know how to properly fight or defend herself. If a dangerous situation were to arise, she would most likely have to rely on someone else to protect her - such as when Chief Arnook assigned Sokka to protect Yue during the Fire Nation's invasion.

Also, while Yue's dedication to her tribe could definitely be viewed as a strength, it could also be seen as a weakness, too. Yue loves her people, and as their princess she feels that she must always do what is best for them. Once again, she puts the well-being and needs of the Northern Water Tribe above her own, regardless of how she actually feels. Yue's relationship with Sokka made this very clear; she felt quite a bit of guilt over her feelings for him because she was engaged to Hahn. It was Yue's dedication to her duties as princess that held her back from trying to continue a relationship with Sokka, feeling that her duty to her people was more important than her own happiness.
