Sherlock Holmes suffers from Chrono-Displacement: simply put, he time travels unpredictably, against his will.
John Watson lives his life the normal way. Or as normal as it can possibly be considering that he first meets Sherlock at the age of six.

It’s a very convincing kiss, one that makes John forget, momentarily, that this is not a typical night in bed with just the two of them. It’s harder to put out of mind when John feels a gentle tug on his hair, followed by a more insistent hand at his jaw pulling him away from Sherlock’s lips and tilting his head back until he meets… Sherlock’s lips. Again. This kiss is much like the one that just ended, but with an added hint of possessiveness in the way that the other Sherlock sucks John’s bottom lip between his teeth and bites down.
“Oh my God,” John says breathlessly. “Are you fighting over me?”
Or: one Sherlock is demanding enough. Two of them are impossible to resist.

Homeostasis: the maintenance of equilibrium within a social group, person, etc.
The top three buttons of Sherlock’s shirt are undone, and John slips two fingers under the fabric, traces slowly from the suprasternal notch up the left side of Sherlock’s neck to just under his ear-“Carotid artery”-and back down-“jugular vein.” This really was meant to help him study, but John can remember running his mouth over Sherlock’s neck where his fingers just were, months ago, and he knows that he’s going to lose his self-control by the time this is over because he’ll never stop wanting to do it again.

Everyone knew the Holmes boys were trouble. There were all sorts of tales from the servants leaving the Holmes manor-usually young men, though there was a shy, young girl or two in their midst-about the sort of sordid things those two got up to. Most people regarded them as lies spread by disgruntled former employees, though some thought there must be a grain of truth behind them. Especially the tales about that strange youngest boy, Sherlock; it didn’t take much work to convince anyone that he was involved in all sorts of nasty things.
They were wrong, of course. Because Mycroft was truly the more depraved of the two, and the rumours hardly encompassed the extent of their affairs.

It takes a moment to parse-not because John’s unfamiliar with this particular sensation against his fingertips, but because it’s not one that he’s ever even remotely considered putting into context with Sherlock.

Sometimes John tells Sherlock that being dead did wonders for his personality.
It takes a faked suicide and reconciliation for Sherlock to begin to understand what people mean to him.

It’s not something she’s done before, not with anyone else. She usually has certain steps she takes, a sequence that’s been drilled into her mind as what good girls do: a chaste kiss on the steps to her building after the first date, something a little less innocent after the second, and she’ll never invite them up before date number five. Molly rarely reaches that milestone and doesn’t like to think about the last man to get there. But all of that is thrown out of the window and forgotten, because this time is different.
