When exactly do we grow up? Is it at thirteen? Eighteen? Twenty, even?

In my opinion, it's probably whenever you realize you can't always chase your dreams around and decide you have to buckle down if you want to be able to put food on your table.

I see your point and all--it's just that there are always exceptions to that assumption...

No, I think you've missed the point. There are plenty of other examples I can use if you feel the artist example offends you.

My point is that a lot of people set out to do great things and live a leisurely life; but in fact, that is not how life works. Sure, you can be a great artist, but how long could you live off the $10,000 you got for a piece of art? It's a feast or famine sort of career: it just all depends on if you get your work sold or not.

TL;DR: Pick a job that is stable.
