A suburban girl out in the woods

It's kind of like City Mouse and Country Mouse.  But in reverse.

I bought a cot, lantern, bug spray etc tonight for my first rough camping trip this weekend.  I'm sharing a straight sided canopy/tent with a friend.  I'm getting excited and nervous!

First victory - putting up and taking down the cot in my living room without hurting myself.  I count ( Read more... )

What kind of cooking apparatus are you taking or having access to? Just a firepit or a camp stove? Camp stove or BBQ pit increases the options dramatically, or you could also get a campfire grill (just the grate to put over a fire, doesn't take up as much room, though camp stoves can be small). But even with just a campfire, you can make some near-gourmet stuff with the right method ( ... )

I'm only counting on firepit though there will be plenty of other folks I know with camp stoves that I could use. I'm really feeling the kebab idea, light and easy. I may not starve after all.

Thanks for the links!

It's all about getting creative *wink*
And seriously, a few meat cuts and a roll of foil (plus a few choice spices, like Spike!) will work for even just a firepit. You just have to keep checking the packets in the coals, and it could take time. Kebabs could be faster.

Don't Go! No, ...just kidding.
But I am right there with you on the camping thing. As far as bringing things, it seems people who bring everything end up the most comfortable. Uh, that was not me on the camping I did in May. Luckily, people took pity on me. Some woman brought an entire other open air tent and set up a kitchen in it. For real. I woke up one morning to vegetarian gravy and biscuits. Loved that woman...
Check all your gear and set it up before you get to the camp site. Esp. air matresses. You don't want to find out to late you have a hole in one, or the air pump lost it's charge.
Oh, and heavy duty bug spray. Did I mention I also got Lyme disease while camping? Yeah. Good times.

Yep - I think my favorite camping thus far comes with accommodations that doesn't involve Lyme disease carrying roommates.

I do admit there are some folks I'm going with that don't mess around and have wicked awesome food and sleeping stuff.

Yep, I'm expecting to forget something but I'm hoping it won't be things like food in airtight containers, bugspray or a sleeping bag. I may need to make a list to be sure!

But carrying all of this crap to the campsite is another story!
