I now believe this was RTD's intention in essentially razing the franchise in the UK. He may or may not be attached to Gwen's character as much as Jack's (I think he resents Jack's popularity a bit because Steven Moffat created him, whereas Gwen was supposed to be his Buffy), but the feeling I got from CoE was that he wanted, more or less, to reboot the series - and if he can get more money from it in the US, all the better.
TWoP makes some good points about the potential that a US remake will be watered down, so I don't feel bad that I have no intention of watching it.
I mean...I suppose I shouldn't have anything against remakes as they CAN be good. Despite myself I actually enjoyed the remake of "Life on Mars", but with Torchwood being so closely related to DW, which is already shown in America...it just seems bizarre to me to recreate it. It's not nearly as an absurd idea as if they decided to do a remake of DW, but...almost.
I keep thinking there has to have been, at some point, an American remake of a British show that was actually good (fwiw, I never watched the US Life on Mars, but I heard that for a while it did stand on its own merits... and then went wonky towards the end), but the only thing that comes to mind is Sanford and Son and that was in the 70s (my dad was a huge fan). Although their remakes of our shows have generally been abysmal as well.
Still, I've been watching a lot of British movies and shows on DVD, and you hear in the commentaries a lot, "We could never have done X in America," and variations of that. Which is prone to dishearten anyone who doesn't stand to gain financially from trying to remake a show.
