Where to begin? I've been without television and internet at home, for weeks. This has finally been resolved by Comcast. It couldn't have happened at a better time as it kept me focused on the task at hand, which is finding a way to move to Sydney ( Read more... )

I don't suppose your occupation is on the Skills Occupation List, or whatever it is?

It is possible to get an employer-sponsored visa (it's what my boyfriend will be getting) and I don't think it does take three months - someone I know got it within two weeks.

Another thing you could to perhaps is to work for an Aussie company where you are now - or work for a company with a large office in Sydney and then, after a year or so, see if you could transfer? It'll take a long time but may be a way out!

I work mediating child support, which is on the skills list. I've been told the Aussie's are just now realizing the importance of establishing and enforcing child support orders, which is why I thought I was a shoo-in candidate for skills visa. And I was, all except for my age.

How did your boyfriend go about finding an employer?

You're right, though. Looking for a law firm with Sydney ties may be another avenue.

Thanks so much for your reply and congratulations to your boyfriend!

Boo, that's such a shame. The age thing is so random and stupid imo.

My bf's quite lucky because he's a doctor and they are actively looking for doctors due to the shortage over there. However, the process for him involved him looking for organisations and then contacting them. They gave him a couple of phone interviews and offered him a job. Maybe it would be worth contacting relevant organisations and asking them? You never know, one might pay off!

Best of luck. :)

Yes, I agree. The age thing is stupid and random.

Although our situations are different, hearing about your boyfriend has given me hope :)

Thank you so much.

Good luck to you and I'll tell you if I have any ideas (even lame ones). I was going through this exact thing 20 years ago except my destination of choice was France. In my case, I didn't have a lot of skills or any other options so I gave up. Then like magic, France 'came looking for me'. Weird. I have a couple of friends who visit Australia whenever they get a chance (like several times a year) and I'll see if they know anything just as soon as I can.

Don't give up!

Wow! How did you manage to get France to come to you??? Nice going!
Thanks so much for your help.

I just got caught up on your entries...the new school sounds truly amazing.

Well, my 'plan' won't work for you, but this is basically how it happened: I decided I needed to go to college and couldn't afford it so I joined the Army for the G.I bill. I liked that more than I thought I would so I reenlisted once. After five years, I stumbled on an amazing job for veterans who speak French and in the years I've worked here it's only gotten better. I couldn't immigrate but I managed to come back a diplomat. The odds blow my mind to this day when I take the time to think about it. Providence.

And yea, the school isn't exactly Hogwarts, but it's not that far off :-)
