"I know," he said. "You did...you did what you felt was right, Renee. That's all anyone can ask you to do. But I need someone I can trust, 'cause there aren't a whole lot of people I trust right now."

Renee took a breath and tried once again. "I didn't want to betray you. But what if Burnett knew something else? What if he knew something that could stop...whatever else might happen today?"
She winced as soon as she finished speaking, knowing too well that wasn't the right thing to say either.

"I'm just so damn tired," he said softly. "Of all of this. I almost lost you today and I've seen more suffering than I think I've seen in my whole career. I don't want to lose sight of what we're here to do - if we let one suspect get pushed, what about the next? Where does it stop?"
