Setting: The Marvel Cinematic Universe is, thankfully, not as bug-fuck crazy as the 616 Comics Universe. In fact, Earth in the movies is portrayed so it's incredibly recognizable - it's basically our Earth with a few minor differences.
Going chronologically, the differences start waaaaay back with the Vikings. They met these aliens from outer space who are insanely powerful and live a hella long time and they called them gods. That's where Norse mythology comes from. And, surprise! Most of it is true on this Earth. Another important thing to note is the space alien gods left a shiny blue box of immense power on Earth. I believe it's called the Tesseract once in canon, but it's probably more commonly known among comic fans as the Cosmic Cube. Or a version of it at least. The Cosmic Cube is basically a cube. That glows. And lets the person holding it do whatever the fuck they want with it.
I wish I was joking about that.
In the film Captain America, we see the Tesseract-Cube for the first time where a man named Johann Schmidt steals it and uses it to create energy weapons that vaporize people and things. Oh, did I mention this was happening during World War II? This is where are next set of differences comes in and I'm fairly certain the weapons Schmidt - more commonly known as the Red Skull - created are part of what causes a leap in technology later on. More on that in a second.
The other big difference around this time is that there's a genius doctor named Erksine who creates a super soldier serum. The unfinished serum was given to Schmidt and then the finished serum was used on one Steven Rogers who went on to become Captain America. The serum amplified everything that was in each of them making them super soldiers who could fight each other in the midst of the Allies fighting the Nazis.
Around that time there was also a man named Howard Stark who was a brilliant inventor and is the other part of why there's a technological leap. See, as much as the "present" Marvel movieverse looks like Earth, we don't have holograms and AI butlers. And people don't exactly build working suits of metal super-armor in a cave in Afghanistan. With a box of scraps. But they do there!!
Howard had a son named Tony Stark who is, as he puts it in the trailer for the Avengers movie, a genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist. Who used to create the most technologically advanced weapons ever. Ever. He also created this nifty device called an arc reactor and I don't speak science so I can't say exactly what it is, but basically it's a completely green energy source.
Speaking of green things, remember how I mentioned there was a whole super soldier serum? Well, the Army in the movie-u is a greedy thing and wants more super soldiers. In fact, they work with a team of scientists on what should be something that would make people immune to gamma radiation but really is just something they hope will work with the whole super soldier idea. Only things go wrong and we get the Hulk. Who is basically a skinny doctor turned into a giant green rage monster. Yep.
And through all of this there is one more big difference, and that's S.H.I.E.L.D. The Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division is a shady pseudo-governmental agency headed up by one Nick Fury who is a badass motherfucker with an eye-patch. We don't actually know much about S.H.I.E.L.D. as it is a secret agency, but it was founded by Howard Stark and Nicky Fury out of the remains of the SSR - the agency Captain America worked with in WWII. They keep an eye on everything and when something goes out of the ordinary (Tony Stark creates armor in a cave with a box of scraps, he starts doing stupid shit with the armor, Thor's hammer touches down in New Mexico, the Hulk goes Hulk, Captain America is found frozen in a block of ice...) they're allllll over it.
S.H.I.E.L.D. is also in charge of and sponsoring what's called the Avenger Initiative. The idea is to create a team of people, not necessarily super people but that's what they got, that could band together and face the odds that no other team could face. Or, as it's put in the comics, "On that day, the Avengers were born-to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand!"
But the Avengers haven't exactly been put together in full yet when Coulson's getting pulled. Mostly because we don't have the Avengers movie yet, sob why is it not 2012 yet.
Personality: Coulson is a really, really minor character in the Marvel movies. So minor, in fact, that when Clark Gregg signed on for the role in Iron Man he thought it was just going to be a one movie deal. But, surprise! Coulson now has important parts in all the Marvel movies, his own short films and he’s a huge fan favorite. Anyways, what all this means is that his personality is a little… sketchy. There’s a lot of gaps left to be filled in.
What we do know is this: he’s an Agent with S.H.I.E.L.D. and he’s a damn good agent. Nothing much phases him. He keeps calm in any situation because it’s his job to keep calm. He’s incredibly level-headed and doesn’t ever raise his voice, even when he’s threatening someone, interrogating them or just kicking ass. Coulson is also a very polite person which is probably due in part to his job. When he’s got guns pointed at him in the midst of a convenience store robbery, he’s incredibly polite to the punks who are doing it.
Coulson’s also got a really incredibly dry and subtle sense of humor. From remarks made to Tony about tazing him and watching Supernanny to talking with his fellow agents in a diner, it's pretty clear he's got an awesome sense of humor. He is a master of deadpan and saying ridiculous things with a straight face. Which really ties into the whole unphased thing quite nicely.
And now for the stuff that I’ve filled in due to the other bits of personality we see in the movies… (Watch the Avengers movie contradict some of this when it comes out.)
He’s a naturally quiet person, which is good for a job like his. He genuinely enjoys standing in the corner and watching the Type As go at it. There’s also a small part of him that takes maybe a little too much enjoyment in being the mysterious Agent in a Suit with Sunglasses that doesn’t say much and seems very straight-laced. And he is pretty straight-laced for the most part. There’s policies and procedures in place for a reason and while red tape is a pain in the ass to get through, taking shortcuts makes for a half-assed job.
He’s very slow to anger and when he does get angry he hardly ever blows up. Instead, he’s the type to get silent in a completely different way than he normally is. General politeness and mystery would turn into stone cold silence and lots of dangerous glares. This is mostly because he’s an internal processor - he deals with things and does everything in his head. Anger, gried, happiness, worry… Everything is expressed in his head and he shows it very subtly on the outside.
Abilities, Weaknesses, and Power Limitation Suggestions: The Son of Coul is, in TVTropes terms, a badass normal. Emphasis on the normal, there. He doesn't have the same kind of physicality as some of the badass normal Avengers, he's not going to be leaping over cars and smashing giant robots on any kind of regular basis. But he is indeed a badass. He's been trained in hand-to-hand and various types of weaponry. He's also very good at improvising when it comes to fights. Coulson takes out two thugs in one of his short films using nothing but his feet, a bag of flour and a shotgun taken from one thug.
As he's a badass normal, Coulson's as weak as any human being is. If you shoot him, he will bleed and possibly die, depending on where he's shot. He's got a high pain tolerance, but he gets injured and hurt just like any other fleshy, non-super-powered human. He's probably got a decent amount of mental resistance, but as we don't know if S.H.I.E.L.D. would know about telepaths, it's sort of a toss-up as to whether or not he would have any mental defenses like that. I would lean towards yes, but it's something that could probably be played on a case-by-case basis, since he's definitely been trained on how to resist interrogation and torture. Because S.H.I.E.L.D. is crazy.

Coulson sighed as he looked down at the donut packages in his hands. He could never decide between the powdered ones and the chocolate frosted. Even when he got both of them, he could never figure out which one he wanted to eat first. They were both so delicious, picking between them was the hardest thing he had to do on these long car trips.
He should probably start getting one kind at one stop and the other at the next. Yes, that was a good idea. It would be his own personal policy. If he had a pattern and way things went, there wouldn't be any temptation to deviate from said pattern and he would never have to choose between them again. It was the perfect solution. Except for the part where that would still mean picking one for the last time and walking out the door with it. Well... When in doubt, use eenie meenie miney moe. He carefully recited the old rhyme in his head as he looked from one package to another. Chocolate.
A small smile crossed his face as he placed the powdered sugar donuts back in the rack and strode confidently towards the cashier. Finally, an end to his troubles. Why hadn't he thought of this before?
An hour and a half later, when his stomach started growling, he remembered why. One package of donuts was never quite enough.

[ the voice feed turns on and for a moment there's only the white noise of the environment around where the feed is being recorded from. but then coulson begins to speak. ]
This is quite the set-up here. I'm very impressed, this level of holographic technology is beyond even what Stark has in his basement.
[ was that a not-so-subtle dig at tony? why, yes. yes, it was. ]
I'm sure everyone marvels at this place when they first arrive, though, so I'll cut that short and introduce myself. I'm Agent Coulson with the Strategic Homeland Intervention and Logistics Division. But you can call us S.H.I.E.L.D. [ pause ] And you are?
[ because what better way to get information out of someone than making it sound like a polite conversation, yeah?
the feed ends there for most people, but for the technologically savvy who would be able to pick up on it, there's some pretty interesting encryption over the rest of the transmission directed towards two people in particular. ]
Barton, give me a sit-rep, if you please. [ that's not a question ] Stark, I want to talk to you too.
