yeah, in real life the flame wasn't like that--the lens just flattens perspective it a bit, i think. the candles DID melt everywhere and ruin my friends velvet table cloth!
yes! this was all set in my colleague bret's apartment. he's a 19th-century style painter, so he has lots of interesting props lying about, like skulls, ornate platters, and a candelabra. the pig head (which is barely visible in these two photos) is from the italian market.
i used kodak 400 film, and i can't remember what the exposure was, but i think it was either 60 or 30. aside from the candles, the scene was lit by a variety of household lamps outside the frame.
