McAfee just took £49.99 from me without my telling them to, they notified me by email, from "payment information they had on file". I've told them not to but I'm a bit bewildered. This just seems like theft.
I looked on their website and they claim that they automatically sign you up for this when you subscribe for a year. I'm sure that I would have noticed agreeing to such a thing. I usually wait until they have an offer on because 50 quid is far too much money for their product. I think I will try to* unistall it and use a different one. I'm so angry.
If they give me my money back, that is. I've asked for it.
*I say try to, last time I tried to uninstall McAfee it had eaten part of itself and wouldn't get off my machine. I think I fixed it at the time as it now works, but I guess I'll find out.
Yeah, I bought a Dell. I used to live with people who knew about computers but I don't anymore and I wanted the warranty. I have mixed feelings about the wisdom of that.
Raise it with your bank as an unautorised transaction. They'll probably try to wriggle and say you must have paid McAfee at some point, but lean on them. In any event the distance selling regs give you the right to cancel a transaction within 14 days, so get on to McAfee and tell them that you didn't authorise it and in any event they should consider any contract to be cancelled and that you want your money back. Let me know if you don't get anywhere.
ephraim says they have a history of this and will try to fob you of with giving you two years subscription instead of refunding your money. You do not have to accept that.
I've emailed them back asking them to cancel it and refund, and also to delete my details. It's through Barclaycard so I'm pretty sure that I can get them to cancel the transaction if it comes to it. They reckon you can cancel within 60 days so I will hold them to that.
The annoying thing is that they don't really have a proper UK service, it's all by email or online chat so I have to wait for them to get back.
Also they are vengeful fuckers. R's previous work cancelled a contract with them and in return they told the regulatory body that the company were using it unlicensed (untrue). Bearing in mind that R's previous employers were a software house themselves that was pretty damn low.
Their business practice leaves a lot to be desired on the ethics front.
They've sent me an email saying they've refunded the money and cancelled the subscription. Now I need to figure out how to get them to delete my billing information, which they seem to have remained mysteriously silent on.
Then I will begin the rubbish process of sorting out my virus protection.

McAfee is awful. Both as a resource hog and a vastly intrusive package, and yes, it's difficult to remove, but it is possible.
