Currently I am baking the most delicious coconut/oatmeal/chocolate chip cookies. Dietarily this was a horrible idea. While delicious, the cookies are are laden with wheat flour and sugar and I can't help but rationalize eating the ones that get broken when I take them off the pan. This cleanse has me convinced that wheat and sugar are basically ( ( Read more... )

Yeah I guess you aren't the only one in that "phase" of veganism, although I am not ( ... )

I don't think it's a phase. I really do forsee having this same version of things for a long time, and I don't really want to change, I guess. I know I could do more, but that doesn't really seem important to me. I think I'm doing enough on this front, and where I try to make changes is on the reducing my consumption (a belief that caused me to change from a "no animal fibres ever! mindset to buying clothing based on a 'love it and will last' principle, regardless of the presence of animal fibre), and on the dietary side, buying organic, local, and whole foods. I'm not trying to justify my logic a) becuase I can't and b) becuase I don't think I have to, but I just thought I'd expand on a few of your (well taken) points ( ... )

Actually, one of my friend decided to eat pizza the other day. He's been vegan for a few years. People now call him sellout although he still eat 99,7% of vegan food.
I think its such a big deal to call him a sellout because he's not. He still does a lot for animals and whatever your ambitions are, you still see more clearely than lots of people on this planet, and more from that, you know WHY you do these things (you just sweetely told me!) and having reasons and justifications that stands are for me more important than anything :)

Aww, you are the sweetest! I love you too!

It's not that I think I'm a bad vegan, it's just that I don't like that it has seemed like a chore lately. I used to be excited about searching menus for foods I could eat, and lately I have been more inclined to be like, "That sounds so yummy! How come I can't eat it? Boohoooo", which is silly!

In my stricter days (and days of not being a broke university student!) I used to buy all my makeup at The Body Shop, and it was wonderful. But now I am bad at remembering to go there when I'm in the mall. So in the morning when I run out of mascara I'll end up running over to Shoppers and picking up whatever. And whatever I pick always ends up being not as nice quality as Body Shop products, come to think of it. I really do need to plan that one better.

Boyfriends and creme eggs. Mmmmmmmmmm.

I don't want to write out a huge rant (because it's the morning and I'm sleepy) but I just wanted to say recently I am so confused by the concept of veganism and that it is definitely not as important to me as it once was. Probably for a few reasons, including ( ... )

Another point of contention that my old roommate Anneka ended up having a huge argument with one of her friends was the whole issue of this guy being of the essentialist idea that "everyone in the world should be, or should strive to be vegan." Which I can kind of understand if you are an extreme animal rights activist, but it is such a cultural imperialist/ethnocentric way of thinking that I find really hard to justify even with the animal rights thing. But I find all "rights" in general to be extremely problematic (heh, the word!) and difficult to define/justify in the first place ( ... )

perhaps it is not logically consistent, but, when it comes to this issue, i think the exact same way..

also, i bought a couple pairs of leather doc martens when i was much younger &still where them to this day. i have never been able to justify the act of doing so, but today.. i could.

Mmm. On one hand I think it's stupid of me to feel "entitled" to make certain concessions (like "if vegan figure skaters can wear leather skates, the vegan shoe fiends among us can goddamn well buy leather shoes!"), but all of that doesn't really matter because I don't think I should have to explain or excuse my shopping choices! We all have our own variety of issues that we take into consideration and no one should be judged or poo-pooed because of that.

And yeah. I just think that buying something you love to death and will last for a long time is a much more responsible consumption decision than is buying something that you don't really like and isn't really comfortable and is made in a sweatshop but is made of a material that isn't animal-based.

Did that make any sense? Probably not :(

this makes perfect sense.. &i agree. in fact, my lifestyle reflects it. i try to avoid leather at all costs, but if i were faced with the option of buying man made shoes built to fall apart or leather ones built to last, i'd more than likely opt for the leather ones. it's one of those situations where the benefits are greater than the lack thereof &sometimes you just have to step around something and view it from a different angle.. especially when sweatshops are concerned. i would sooner buy a leather ensemble than buy any article of clothing direct from a sweatshop.

THIS IS THE VEGAN PATROL!! COME OUT WITH YOUR DURABLE SHOES OFF!!!

Seriously, I have no answers to any of that, as I have similar problems fairly frequently. My biggest issues lie in the disconnection to production of animal products.. and snythetic materials, for that matter... But I'm not entirely sure how to reconcile all of that.
