DECISION 2005!

Jun 23, 2005 21:35

So last night I did my duty as a good New Democrat and went to vote in the Ottawa-Centre candidate nomination. Until about 7:45pm, this was me. A thousand points to anyone who gets the brilliantly nerdy reason I chose this particular image of me. There is a clue beside Jamey Heath's head.

I'm happy about Dewar as well. Jamey totally shines as a "back room" guy and I think's he's quite valuable in that position.

I'm very much going to have to sew myself one of those fanny packs. So adorable!

Annnnd, that cake reminded me that you're a vegan! I've been feeling especially environmentally aware over the past few months (and am rather lactose intolerant) so I've been trying new foods without meat, eggs, and milk products. Any favourites to recommend?

Glad to hear you're excited about Dewar! I hope you'll be around to help him out pre-election. Campaigns are so much fun in Ottawa!!

As for new vegan foods, goodness. I don't know where to start! I've been eating out a lot lately (I love you full time employment and being able to afford things!) and also I'm pretty much the least healthy person alive. What kind of suggestions are you looking for, things you can make yourself? Things to try when eating out? Meal foods? Snack foods? Healthy things? Yummy bad-for-you things? I have many recommendations for each category!

Eating out and snack foods! Also, which brands of bread/soups/whatever-you-can-think-of-off-the-top-of-your-head stuff are all vegan-friendly? I've got a wonderful veggie cookbook for everyday meals.

And! All of the websites I've been reading mention that having a vegan lifestyle means not buying leather or wool. Wool! Can you be a food-only vegan?

this will be really long! ageofscience June 25 2005, 12:39:00 UTC
Without knowing you those are still kind of broad advice categories. It depends on what your budget is like, what you like the taste of, and what geographical circumstances will allow. I don't really do chain restaurants so my best recommendations are pretty Ottawa-specific. I can fill you in on those closer to when you move here, if you like ( ... )

Both the pink and the blue ones are already all sewn up and everything! If you want, we could do a crafty mail trade. You'd just have to tell me your waist size so I can stick on the velcro, and then pick the one you want, and I'll mail it to you. In return you could mail me anything you would like to make!

Or you could come to Ottawa for a visit and pick it up yourself :)

It doesn't have to be sewing! You could knit or paint or draw or make a mixtape or collage or write up some recipes... anything! I just like mail!!

i would've been really conflicted too in making that decision, but i think you made the right choice. i've seen a bunch of interviews and debates with jamey heath before he announced he was running for the nomination and i wasn't too impressed with his style. and who knows, maybe he would be better to face off against mahony. i guess we'll find out eventually.

also, see you tonight at xiu xiu!

I'm really conflicted making EVERY decision. I almost didn't go to the meeting because I thought I would explode when the time came to make the choice. Also I was still residually bummed that Alex Munter decided not to run. Anyway, I just ended up voting based on who I would feel more comfortable campaigning for, and who was more in favor of decentralization. I should have mentioned that there were also two female candidates, but one of them went on this disgusting national unity rant and was wearing a hot pink linen (?) pant suit. So gross :(

See you tonight!!!

I do I do! They're one of the few bands that I'll consistently make an effort to go see, because they're delightful and the shows always bring out the best of the Ottawa crowd!

Meh, the more slick and Liberal-like the NDP becomes, the less relevant they are. Why vote for Liberals-Lite when you can vote for the Liberals?

Why? Because re-appropriation done in a sneaky postmodern way can be really effective sometimes. I wholly admit that I'm still a little uncomfortable with that kind of tactic, because it still seems a lot like "stooping to their level".

Also, given that I care less and less about what happens in electoral politics and am largely only concerned with the spectacle aspect, I almost feel like I should have just voted for who would have made things more dramatic. But then there was that whole pesky conscience thing nagging me. Sigh!

Don't bring postmodernism into this! It's nothing new in electoral politics.

Of course it's not new, but I brought it up because I think there are many people who now feel like it's okay to use these strategies when they may not have before. It's been my experience that the more people are all about queer theory or postmodern theory, the more they can allow for tactics of re-appropriation more practically in their lives.

I'm obviously not going to bother trying to defend that position because it's not one I'm aligned with and I'm still personally pretty uncomfortable with these kinds of tactics. All I'm saying that I'm trying my best not to be too harsh or critical of those who are all for re-appropriation stemming from slightly different mainfestations of similar theoretical standpoints, and so on.
