i saw that single mom t-shirt today at the rideau center and i thought it was totally gross, even for that "happy daze" place :(

It IS still totally gross, though somehow not as maddening to me for some reason? I guess in terms of clientele they generally cater to the lowest common denominator and it's not surprising. But in a gay sex shop it's way worse (I think) because I expect them to have "good" politics and be welcoming and transgressive and... who knows. It's mostly just really stupid.

i absolutely agree. it shouldn't be acceptable for any dude to buy that shirt, but having it sold in a gay sex shop is just much more disappointing, i guess? it's really insulting because i have a single mom and i love her!

but yeah, i completely forgot to say good job to you girls!
have you spoken to the owner of the store at all?

Yeah, I have a single mom too, and she's pretty much the most amazing lady in the entire world. I think single moms are some of the strongest and amazing women in the world. Just in general they don't receive even one hundredth of the respect they deserve, but things like this that go out of their way to make fun of them... it's not okay.

I guess I also expect that someone in a gay sex shop would be more receptive to understanding reasons why it should be taken down than an owner of a store that sells fuzzy dice that look like boobs and pot leaf clocks. Ahhh, Happy Daze...

Jessamy has spoken to the owner previously. We wanted to last night once we had finished postering but the place was closed. I'm going back today or calling if I don't have time.

Thank you!! Hey, I meant to mention- there's a small possibility I might be in your neck of the woods this weekend. I won't have much time, but if you're up for a quick ice cream or tea I'd love to see you!

Sure! Soy icecream in Montreal is part of the past until summer 2006 :(
(when I saw the closed for winter sign, it was REALLY my summer is gone shock.)

Sure sure, I have nothing planned Friday as of yet, work until 5 on Saturday and a party later on at night... I'm sure we can fit a cup of tea here or there! I'd love to see you too :)

Noooo! Oh well, tea is better in the cold weather anyway.

If I end up coming (it depends on how much paper-writing work I can do in the next two days), I wouldn't get there until Saturday afternoon or evening due to work commitments. But I'll keep you informed as things develop!

i'm throughly confused as to why wildes would be selling that stuff in the first place. they used to be all about leather men and 'gun' oil...weird.

Because the owner is a total douche?

I'm sorry, that's the most intelligent reason I can think of at this point. I loved when they were all about the leather men and "gun" oil :(

i was listening to a radio show this morning and they were debating such word tee shirts. i think it is an interesting topic.. apparel as controversy and it's true.. most tee shirts come with extra offense, but those are very much out of line. i thought the "he wasn't your boyfriend last night" ones were as ridiculous as they got, but this... ugh! i would be putting those posters up all over town! way to go!

Ahh, the politics of graphic tees! They have a long and illustrious history of stupid and offensive messages, don’t they? Do you remember a couple years ago when (I think it was) Abecrombie and Fitch got in all that trouble for selling shirts with really offensive ethnic stereotypes on them?

I think the difference in this case, for me, is the location where the shirts are being sold. It’s more surprising to me to see that kind of garbage promoted by a company that is supposed to be progressive, it’s just really sad.

The only thing I remember headlined about A&F is when they sold thongs for little girls.. if it was A&F, but with a story like that what you mention is of no surprise!

Progressive companies regressing... I am sure this one is not the only one and I commend you for speaking out about what they are doing.. it is pretty sad.
