Tread lightly and carry birdseed

Aug 16, 2006 16:13

I have been having the best days ever lately. My new philosophy about life is that every day when I wake up I have to decide what would be the awesomest thing I could do that day, and then I do that thing. I am of the opinion that more people should try this plan.

No, no. No shame! Although appropriately, "opprobrium" (or, the feeling of disgrace for shameful conduct) is one of the GRE words I learned!

I am definitely making it my goal to go to Esperanza as many times as possible before I move. Every time I'm there I just want to make and think and write. I really hope there is a Toronto equivalent.

I'm trying to think of a Toronto equivalent, and Moonbeam Cafe in Kensington Market or Grapefruit Moon north of Bloor on Bathurst come to mind.

Oooh! I will definitely investigate these. Lately I have decided that I really like being a cafe kind of person. It's so much nicer to work with sounds and smells and just, life around!

The Favourite Game is one of my favourite books. :)

Also, feeding birds! Such a great plan.

I think I would now consider it among my favourites too! It has all the elements I love best in fiction- really beautiful prose, lots of references to geography, and exceedingly corporeal. I feel like I could talk about the reasons I love it forever. We should have a conversation about it before I leave!

There is a whole huge bag of birdseed at my apartment. I will bring you some next time I see you. It's the best idea I've had in a while!

If that's true, how come I still make so many mistakes? RIDDLE ME THAT, ZACH!

PS. When are you moving? Are you really excited yet?

resonably excited to settle down a little and stop living out of bags / boxes.

when do you move to toronto? will you be going to see cat power?

mistakes are lifes little way of giving us the wisdom we need at a future date.

take care. xo

I don't know the day I'm moving yet, but I'm guessing either the 31st or 1st. I hadn't planned on going to see Cat Power just because I've been so out of the show loop lately that it honestly didn't really occur to me that I COULD go. Hm, maybe I will reconsider!

And I totally hear you on wanting to feel settled and living out of bags/boxes!!

I like your new philosophy of life, very good. Those do sound like fun days. The Favourite Game is one of my favourite books too! And wherever do you find one-dollar novels???

They have a one dollar shelf at The Word, behind the door! I have been going there at least twice a week because that dollar shelf is so good lately. Almost all the books on my list (including The Favourite Game, even) were found on that shelf!

It seems to me that we really should have a day out involving the dollar shelf at The Word, a trip to the big library, and then sitting down to read and have snacks at Esperanza.

Yes, that sounds like an excellent plan! Maybe one of the next few days? I have a job interview early Friday morning, but am otherwise free. :)

Well, I'm free any time tomorrow, so if you feel like going out after your interview, gimme a call?

Those words are impressive, particularly because I have no idea what they mean. The more useless a word is in having every day conversations with every day people the more impressive it is, verily!

P.S. Esperanza is amazing.

Esperanza is indeed amazing! When I was there the other day they were hanging up new artwork that was all wild animal themed, and playing the Magnetic Fields, and I was really happy about those things!

Anyway, I'm kind of cranky about / at my new words, because I feel like if they mean the exact same thing as other words that already exist, then why bother having more esoteric versions of them? Particularly if they only become intelligible to us anyway by equating them with words we already use. Like, why have "approbrium" if we already have "approval"?

Or maybe I'm just being surly because I resent people who already have good vocabularies without having to force it :(
