Our dryer needs replacing. We've know we've been heading this way for a while--we keep finding black streaks on our clothes. It's not such a big deal when it's on a pair of jeans or a navy or black shirt, but  it really, really sucks when it's on a favorite (white/yellow/pink/orange) shirt, especially when it falls right on your boob. Nothing gets ( Read more... )

The 'What If....' question katwoman_68 July 1 2010, 03:44:08 UTC
One of the writing books I have is called What If. And the first author I heard (ok, actually read - in the preface of one of his books) mention this was Stephen King.

Interesting question. A similar question I asked myself when I started my first multi-chapter H/G, was 'why would [a character] behave that way?'

I've got three what ifs going on right now; all vastly different from each other.

Have you tried Spot Shot for the hopeless stains? I've had a lot of success with that.

Have you tried spraying the smudgy stuff w/WD40, by chance? Sometimes that's good at getting greasy stuff out of clothes. In some ways, it makes no sense to put "oil" on something like that, but I've had pretty good luck w/putting WD40 on grease, letting it sit for a while, then putting some other stain remover on it before washing in as hot water as possible. It's not an absolute cure-all, but it does work on some stuff, at least!

And good luck w/the whole dryer thing... I hate spending money on stuff like that for some reason. I keep thinking stuff shouldn't need repairs, as much as they cost initially ;-)

As for the dryer issue, I would try either hairspray or vodka on the stains (the cheapest varieties). My mother uses vodka to remove oil based paints from clothing. I used hairspray when I accidentally dried a pen in a pocket. They work because they are non-water based solvents. If water won't dissolve the stain molecules, then try not-water. ;)

I ADORE that quote!! The What-ifs have lead me to 50,000 words and counting . . . What if Percy met Audrey BEFORE the war? What if she's Muggleborn? What if she's related to Neville?
What-ifs are fun!! :D

I can attest to the non-water solvents getting stains out...I had a not-really-awake moment at work and splattered a brand new pair of jeans (and a wall) with sharpie ink) a combination of rubbing alcohol and shout/spray'n'wash got it all out. If it's a greasy stain you might also try dishwashing liquid. Original Dawn in particular is great at breaking up oil (ask all the brown pelicans being cleaned up at Fort Jackson)
