That 30 days of HP Meme that everyone and their dog is doing...

01. Discuss how you got into Harry Potter

I came into HP a little late, I guess. It was either in 2000 or 2001 (can't remember which, exactly). Andy was in the second grade, and his teacher started reading SS/PS to his class. The school sent home a note saying she was planning on reading it, and offering to take any kids out of the room if their parents had any objections. I'm pretty sure I'd never even heard of HP at the time, so I asked one of my good friends, who taught fourth grade, what she thought of the books, and she was just totally over the moon about them. And then I saw some news story about how some people were protesting the series because it taught witchcraft or some such nonsense, so I immediately went out and bought the first book (because I'm like that--if you try to tell me I can't read a book because it's going to make me XYZ, I'm immediately going to read it so I can make up my own mind, thank you very much). ...I flew through it and went the next day and bought the next three and devoured them too.  So I read them, and I loved them, but I wasn't really into them, if that makes sense.

And then, three years later, in 2003, I went to the grocery store to get some stuff for dinner, and there was OotP, just sitting there. I didn't know it at the time, but that was the day it had been released. I remembered that I'd liked the series before, so I tossed it in my cart, planning on reading it when I got a chance.

I didn't put it down until I finished it. And then I almost lost my mind, because there we were, at the end of the fifth book, and there was nothing more. And OMG, I wanted more. I needed more. So I googled HP, trying to figure out when the next book was going to come out. And then I discovered fanfiction. I had no idea what fanfic even was at that time, but I was lucky, because I stumbled upon Checkmated first, which meant that, in general, the quality was better than what I might have found in other places. *cough ff.net cough*  And Checkmated led me to Gryffindor Tower and Sugarquill, and all of a sudden, I had a whole new world of things to read. :)

I lurked for a while, until GT imploded. And I was not happy, because there were stories I was avidly following and how was I supposed to get my fix if I couldn't read them at GT??? Luckily, I managed to figure out that  some of my favorite authors were heading over to PhoenixSong, so I stalked followed them. And I didn't lurk--it was new and small and not nearly so intimidating as the other archives, so I joined right in. I volunteered to be a pre-beta (*waves at ohginnyfan *), and then I became a mod and finally an admin (still not quite sure how exactly that all happened, but that's okay)--I met some of the bestest, most wonderful people over there. :)
