That 30 days of HP Meme that everyone and their dog is doing...

01. Discuss how you got into Harry Potter

I came into HP a little late, I guess. It was either in 2000 or 2001 (can't remember which, exactly). Andy was in the second grade, and his teacher started reading SS/PS to his class. The school sent home a note saying she was planning on reading ( Read more... )

Heck, no, I don't mind! Go right ahead--spread the love. :) I'm always interested to read the answers to these types of questions. :)

I keep thinking I should do this myself. After all it is anniversary month -- where on earth did those 3 years go?

My story is pretty similar to yours, though we came at fandom from different angles (I didn't discover fanfiction til much later; I discovered fansites instead)

Do it! I love reading other fans' stories.

I seriously just stumbled on fanfic. I was really just looking for any info about books 6 and 7, but found a whole world where there was the speculation into the future of the series that I was looking for, but it was in story form.

And here, I'll match your amazing icon. :D

I love all the icons from that scene. I have so many but I tend to use that one mostly just because it's my favourite. *tries out another one for variety*

I found speculation via a completely unrelated website. Someone linked to some DH predictions and I was like 'wait ... wait ... are you telling me there's Harry Potter on the internet?' I had no idea, which was a massive shame because I didn't find that site until March 2007. I missed so much.

And then I discovered fanfiction. I had no idea what fanfic even was at that time, but I was lucky, because I stumbled upon Checkmated first, which meant that, in general, the quality was better than what I might have found in other places. *cough ff.net cough*Oh good. A girl in one of my classes decided to look for Harry Potter fanfic and went to ff.n... yeah, it didn't end well. I tried to tell her "no, don't go there", but it was like one of those movies where there's two characters, and one of them is trying to tell the other not to run towards the evil whatchacallit, and of course the second character keeps going and all the first character can do is scream. :P ( ... )

There's definitely good stuff on ff.net, but there's lots of not-so-good stuff there, too. You just have to know how to wade through it all...and it takes patience.

You won't catch any hell from me about lurking at PS. If I hadn't come in at the very beginning (I think I'm member #11), I'd probably still be lurking, too.

Also, your icon is made of win!

Yeah, and honestly, I don't. It was easier when the site was smaller and I only had thirty to glance through... now it's more like thirty pages, and I'm not willing to do that. I will read recs though.

Plus, I don't like ff.net because of all the ads - it's just really inconvenient sometimes, plus I'll never forget how in one instance I accidentally clicked on an ad and got a virus. I've been going lately but only because a friend has started posting a fic there - it's a good fic and it's the only place I can find it, so I go. But after I'm finished reading I leave.

Honestly, lately I've just been getting my fic from fests and friends on LJ. I go to PS, but for some reason I have a hard time reading Harry in fanfiction, and given that PS is largely Harry/Ginny, that makes it hard.

Oh... *feels sad for being a fanfiction writer*
I promise, my fics aren't junk like some of the things there. :( Give 'em a chance...

My policy is to navigate through other people's favorites. If I find that I like the style they like, then I can devour all of those. That way, I don't have to "wade through the junk" as much.
