Paying for this baby....

I keep meaning to ask this but forget, then littlemrs had something in her journal and it reminded me....

Did you moms have to prepay for your delivery charges before the delivery?

When we were at my last doctor's appointment I had to go into the accounting department first so that she could tell me what I will owe for everything. Then she told me that my portion must be paid by my next appointment. I also have to do this at the hospital - prepay for services.

This really concerns me for several reasons, first of which is what if my doctor isn't even the one who delivers my baby? What if for some reason I have to go to another hospital to deliver? What if I end up like Sand's brother's friend and EMS guys deliver my baby in my living room?

I can understand that they want to ensure that you have insurance and that you have financial resources, but having to pay up front sucks. I mean, they won't even file with my insurance until after the baby is born, so why should I have to pay my "estimated" portion?

This sucks for other reasons:
1. I have a $1,000 deductible but our company will reimburse us for $500 of that. However, I can't get that reimbursement until AFTER the services are provided.

2. I take out money each pay period and put it in a medical reimbursement account. Again, I can't claim that money until AFTER the services are provided.

3. Chances are that our company will change insurance plans in March (our benefits begin in March and not January). I'm scared that I'm going to get screwed into having to pay two deductibles - $1000 for the current plan and $1000 for the new plan. Our HR director says that's unlikely and chances are the new insurance will pick up all of the expenses. That really doesn't seem fair since most of this pregnancy has taken place during the current policy and the new policy will only be in effect for a month.

In the end, not much will come out of our pocket because of the medical reimbursement (I know it's coming out of my pocket, but it's more like it's money I don't know I have since I don't see it in my paycheck) and because I took out hospitalization insurance that will pay me $2,000 for each hospital stay. But, again, I can't get that money back until after the services.
