I paid for expedited service and it took 2 weeks from the day we filed the paperwork at the post office. So it can happen quickly (if you pay enough, I guess.)

I would stop in at the PO or Costco (passport photos are 5 bucks there) and ask. I think so (all passports have photos) but I have utterly no idea in reality. :)

Where ya going in Jan?

Depending on Jason's schedule, we're thinking of picking up where we left off and take our Australia/New Zealand trip in February or March (we had planned to do it this past Feb, but I was way too far along pregnant to make the trip). I'm not even positive that we'll take her, but we may. Jason has family friends in Australia who would love to see her...

Fantastic! My neighbors just moved to NZ for 9 mo (he's an MD and doing work among the Maori) and I so wanted to climb into their suitcase! Their 16yo daughter is doing her junior year over there. Cool, eh?

Sounds like a great idea! Fun.

yes you need a photo - the passport is good for 5 yrs at the age and its ridiculous its even that long - Orla's pic is from she was about 4/6 wks old

you will also need to have you and J go to the post office when you are applying for it - both parents have to be there or if 1 of you is missing you need some notorized thing saying its ok by missing parent to get a passport - guess its cause of snatched kids issues

if you do it now you should be fine / won't need it expidited since you are not travelling till Jan - you can always call and have it sped up if needed - we did that with O's and I also think you need a birth certificate and they keep it - I think all the info is on the website and don't know the website but I am sure google will help

Huh. So, I could have a picture made of Jillian now and sneak some random toddler out of the country with her passport. Nice, though I suppose it is more convenient for parents.

Thanks.

I don't think I would want to pay the $75 or whatever it is to update it every few months to keep her updated :) I think in the old days I was on my mom's passport which I think meant I could only fly if I was with my mom.. that is kind of awkward too

she does look a tiny bit like the original picture and since we all travel together I don't worry about it and I do carry her birth certificate too - I would assume if my parents were traveling with her on her own I would hope they would do more checking

This may be a really stooopid question, but....Are you required to have a chld in a car seat if you are in a cab? I was just wondering how it's handled in big cities where people take cabs a lot instead of driving in their own cars.

Yep exactly what docony said.....gotta have a picture, 5 years, birth certificate...must have both parents! or the notorized thing, they are really big on that. Can't remember how long Jeb's took but if you can do it the sooner the better. We took him to Germany at 6 months so I think the picture was taken sometime around 2 months maybe...his head was all flopped over, no hair....yup really looks like him now! They made me kinda prop him on a stool and then stand off to the side so my arm is in the background, lol

Also as far as air travel goes...even if you're not getting her a seat because she's under 2, she still needs a ticket for international travel and I think it was like 10% of the cost of our fare.

When Dakota was that age what the passport office did is that they added his name on my passport. I will look at it at home tonight and see more specifics on it, but basically i did not need a seperate passport for him and if i remember correctly that is good until the child is 12. So last year i got Dakota's first passport.
