The Prussian doctors thought giving her morphine would hasten her end. Of course, since she was in torturous agony for *months*, one might expect them to change their minds, but oh no! Not they!
Nineteenth century doctors in general were total dicks, but the Prussians seemed to take it to a whole new level. They behaved very badly in regards to her husband's throat cancer, and made a fuss about Vicky getting chloroform when she went into labor, because all women were supposed to suffer as much as possible during labor. Blargh.
I just watched the movie version of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo...not recommended. Ugh. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's not rah rah about how wonderful this schlock is.
Loved the Historian, I might need to go re-read it - it's been a while.
