USDAA Weave Spacing

I’ve been following the 24” weave spacing discussion on the USDAA list, its very reminiscent of the A-frame discussion from a couple of years ago.   Since it is a subscription list, I’m not going to post any of the emails here, if you want to follow it, go subscribe to the yahoogroups list.

As for me, I’m in favor of 24”. I like them, my dogs like ( Read more... )

It seems to me to be a no-brainer especially when other venues have gone to 24in weaves. Hopefully the rusty wheel will eventually get the oil so to speak and it will come about soon. I am personally in favor of the 24in weaves.

For what it's worth Ken used to run a sheltie back in the day. He is the owner of USDAA, so it's his company.

I think you also need to take into account how the second other venues make a change, people start coming at USDAA demanding the same changes. I get the whole being a leader thing, but it seems like people are always whining about why isn't USDAA more like so-and-so. If I were Ken I'd be damned sick of it too.

I've followed the posts about the weaves on the USDAA Sounding Board and an argument can be made that too much trialing, training, drilling and 2o/2o aframe training can explain a lot of those injuries. Just saying...

My post isn't so much about the weave spacing issue, as it is a about leadership, decision making, and vision. He might be sick of the whining, but it comes with the territory. If this is true, then he needs to look at the larger picture of what is best for the dogs competing in his venue and put his own issues aside. In other words, if he is damned sick of it and it is affecting his perspective and larger picture decision making, then perhaps its time to let someone else run the organization.

As for what is causing the injury, again he could take the lead and sponsor a study to determine of weaves or other types of equipment, training methods, etc., are potentially causing injury.

It seems wise for inquiries and concern to continue about weave spacing and the tire or any other piece of equipment that puts our dogs at risk. If the conversation stops, nothing will ever change. It doesn't seem that USDAA has recognized that there is a problem. That, in itself, is a problem. Not sure how to get them to see it because there is plenty of proof...videos , written testimonies, etc ( ... )
