... to explain charity to you. (I'm sure one or two read this journal.)

They have the best way of describing forms of charity, and which is superiour.

"The highest degree of charity-above which there is no higher-is he who strengthens the hand of his poor fellow Jew and gives him a gift or [an interest-free] loan or enters into a business partnership with the poor person."

Something like that?

That's essentially the financial equivalent of "Give a man a fish, and you've fed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

Levels of Tzedakah:

1 Giving begrudgingly
2 Giving less that you should, but giving it cheerfully.
3 Giving after being asked
4 Giving before being asked
5 Giving when you do not know the recipient's identity, but the recipient knows your identity
6 Giving when you know the recipient's identity, but the recipient doesn't know your identity
7 Giving when neither party knows the other's identity
8 Enabling the recipient to become self-reliant

I'm looking at #7, which precludes the attaching of any conditions to the charity.
