People who know me know that I am a strongly personal conservative (Catholic) but with Libertarian political leanings. This election disgusted me from the start and that has carried through to the end. The Republicans lost when they chose a man who's spent most of his political career spitting on the base. They chose a man, not because they believed in him, but because they felt a duty to choose the most "electable" candidate. There was no total record voter turnout. The turnout is comparable to 2004, but the numbers came from so many Democrats who came out an voted. Some were even raised from the dead for the occasion. Many Republicans decided to stay home rather than "hold their nose" and vote for McCain. Some believed in McCain, but most voted out of duty to the party. Duty won't get the base out in droves the way that passion for the people out for Obama.
I had a tongue in cheek status on facebook and a friend of my husband's was full of righteous indignation that I said something mean about Obama. He brought up that even McCain says that Obama's a good man. My reaction was, "McCain's an ass. Why the fuck should I give a damn what he says?" He's a very earnest young man and obviously thought my comment was to be taken seriously, so I didn't respond quite that way. But it does demonstrate how passionate Obama's disciples are. I think Obama's a vile person and the next 4 years are going to suck, but that was a given.
I strongly feel that people get the government they deserve and came across this quote which summed it up. Wisdom for the ages.
“Do not blame Caesar, blame the people of Rome who have so enthusiastically acclaimed and adored him and rejoiced in their loss of freedom and danced in his path and gave him triumphal processions… Blame the people who hail him when he speaks in the Forum of the ‘new, wonderful good society’ which shall now be Rome’s, interpreted to mean ‘more money, more ease, more security, more living fatly at the expense of the industrious.’ Julius was always an ambitious villain, but he is only one man.”
