Hmmm...I'm not sure about opiate. Opiates tend to cloud the brain and have an intense calming effect. Patriotism (and religion) both tend to get people downright stirred up (and sometimes terribly violent!) ;)

Actually I thought the new "opium" of the people was self hate of your own country's culture and language.
