You're right. He seems like a jerk. The combo of "I alone don't am not blinded by love for the stuff I am writing about" with "I alone am worthy of the stuff I am writing about because, and I alone will be approved by it." The thing is, Beckett wanted people to read him. He cared a lot about his audience. Not that they should be an audience, but that they should find something that they wanted to repeat in what he wrote. That's why he was a playwright too. That's why "Not I," which is great, and which is for actors, and therefore for readers, and therefore it all is I.

Why shouldn't you love what you're writing about?

I don't think he earns that "orgueil secret." You couldn't love Beckett if that was the truest thing about you, and so what if everyone is vain in secret or even half-publically. He certainly sounds as though he is.
