Well, People are in Strange CircumstancessarahdroppedoutMay 23 2009, 03:55:01 UTC
People have a strong sense of wanting to exert control over their environment. It is not necessarily a control-freak problem, it is the much more understandable feeling that if I (or some group I am identified with) is marginalized then my own economic and social position may become untenable. The problem is that people try to generalize these feelings, which are fine in small groups, to large groups of people. They likewise tend to think of problems in terms of appealing to powerful groups to impose 'solutions'. Unfortunately, the idea that we could reasonably comprehend the effects of a 'policy' that can affect 300 million or more people is extremely arrogant. We need to stop being so pretentious about what we, as humans can do. Naturally this criticism extends to government activity.
