Apparently there's something important about this Duke Nuke'em game? I just keep hearing people talk about how it is an important piece of GAMING HISTORY which makes me laugh because, seriously, GAMING HISTORY. Nerds like to pretend that video games have some sort of noble pedigree but, let's face it, they're pretty fucking stupid. I like video ( Read more... )

Hey, the pedigree ain't noble, but there's still an interesting background to the industry and the characters within!

Either way it's my job to write about it, so here I am.

The game has been continuously in development for 13 years. Now, as many times before, it looks like someone competent is finally going to finish it. For some reason people still care. Some people seem to think the most prurient of mid-nineties pop culture aimed at young teenagers will be an important milestone for some reason. The game was revolutionary in '97 because everyone played it while their parents were asleep because there were boobs and cursing in it. I'm not sure what even the nostalgia blinded gamers think they'll get out of this oft-promised sequel.

Sheer novelty value, most likely. That's probably what Gearbox is banking on.

Duke Nukem Forever is a big deal because the game was first announced in 1997. 1997 was a long time ago; games usually do not take longer than 5 years from concept to release. The fact that this game was in active development for over a decade makes it highly unusual.

The game's (non)-existence became something of a running joke; for a while it was believed that the game had been canceled long ago and the developer was just stringing everyone along for the hell of it.

Then the developer finally went bankrupt and it was revealed that the game had been in actual active development the whole time. The project was restarted completely from scratch at least three times at the team leader's behest to try and keep up with technological trends - a masterful example of how not to make a video game.

Now some other company has bought the rights and is attempting to make this trainwreck into an actual computer game that people might actually pay money for.
