I HATE JOSS WHEDON / JOSS WHEDON SUCKS *

I haven't yet seen Cabin in the Woods. A lot of people have recommended it to me, many of them trusted sources with generally good taste in movies and who have no special love for Joe Whedon. And, you know, I don't want to offend any of you. I know you guys are cool and all, but I've got issues with Joe. Part of it is that I hate popular things ( Read more... )

The kind of vitriol that makes me want to be a better writer. high_castle May 30 2012, 11:21:03 UTC
This is what happens when you give a college newspaper writer a column in a big-girl newspaper. Whedon's work in still middle-of-the-road fare, and appeals to dilettante genre fans because it lets them fancy themselves on the high side of the bell curve without actually challenging them, or expecting them to have more than a cursory knowledge of horror movies. For that reason, is it any surprise the movie is called "Cabin In The Woods"? Saying you like Joe Whedon's writing is like saying your favorite musical genre is pop ( ... )

I am totally neutral on Whedon, don't like him, don't hate him. I did rather like The Avengers, though I was painfully aware of how the fast-moving and witty dialogue between the characters had been perfectly tailored for Internet-people.

hold the phone, Martyrs was awesome >:[ That was the only "torture porn" movie that scared the living shit out of me, because it wasn't just psychopaths cutting nipples off for no reason.

Also, you're pretty much right about Mulholland Drive, in spite of not liking it. Trying to explain a Lynch film is like trying to analyze a dream in which your pet was a flying carrot. There's nothing to "get." I liked the movie, though.

I actually like Martys, I meant that the final revelation made the character's situation worse, not that it made the movie worse. XD

Anyway, only someone who watches nothing but nerdbait genre shows would think that the only reason someone might not like Cabin in the Woods is because they're dumb. I mean, come the fuck on.
