My triumph, and a shameless plug

Something Useful To Everybody has been updated. Am I bit of a whore plugging my blog in my blog? Probably. There's a stand-up routine in this somewhere, or at the very least a motivational caption, so at least my shameless plug has the potential to generate something kind of funny ( Read more... )

Congrats! I've seen this happen to a lot of my friends from HS and I'm glad to see that you're taking care of yourself. I see a lot of people just letting it slide. Sometimes that list includes me - but at least I know how to eat healthy, even if I backslide. It's a matter of choosing healthy snacks, for me.

Anyway, good luck and enjoy feeling good about yourself!

Thanks Mink. I will! I will enjoy feeling good about myself!

If there's one challenge (there isn't but let's just pretend) to losing weight, it's that it can be really, really easy to end up in a backslide. It's just as easy to get out of a backslide, so long as you have willpower, but Bad Things tend to reduce willpower significantly.

I like bringing little mixes of walnuts/almonds/some other kind of nut and raisins to work with me, sustaining myself with twigs and berries in between meals.

Yeah, my problem is that alfredo sauce is my feel-good food. However, whole wheat pasta with olive oil and salt & pepper is also a feel-good food, and at least it's better for me.

Eggs are actually good for you. If you can have hard-boiled eggs, especially the Omega 3 eggs, then that is a good snack as well. But yes, walnuts & almonds are great nuts to eat.
I've gotten into the Kraft South Beach Snack bars. Very easy to carry with me and generally pretty filling. We've also started buying more frozen veg. Fresh veg is better but I just never get myself to eat it in time, unless it is salad.

I am going back to school next week. I'm really hoping that the additional walking and sunlight will help me stay happy and motivated.

I think very few people have a feel-good, comfort food that's actually good for them. As much as I love a good, crisp stock of celery to munch on, or a nice carrot, neither is terribly comforting. A big steaming bowl of creamy, cheesy, and delicious fettucine alfredo, on the other hand, will make anyone feel better even after the worst of days.

I like eggs, when we can be bothered to mass-boil a bunch of them to be eaten at a later date. Nuts and berries are just more convenient when I want a snack for my work day. And bars-- usually granola bars-- are a favorite, too.

Speaking of fresh veg, if you can, utilize any nearby farmer's markets to the best of your ability. The veg is awesome and you're supporting local crops, win-win.

Good luck at school!

Hey - Congrats on losing weight! As someone who's had a similar struggle, I feel your pain. congrats about getting to 36 - thats a big step, - that's the size at which you move out of fat people clothes and into stuff you can buy at normal stores.

Me and Alain have been working out at a program called crossfit - Theres one in boston, and I'd suggest checking it out. I've lost like 10 pounds this month on it, and I'm starting to get built. Gl with the weight!

Thanks Ben. Yeah, 36 is the point where you can wear pants other than those made for big-butted people. It feels good to wear jeans and look slim(mer) again.

Carys and I go to Workout World nearby, which has so far been a great experience. It's affordable and the trainer program is pretty good (though it has high turnover for trainers). Good luck with the weight yourself, man!

How else are things going for you?
