Gender: Female
Age: 17 --> aged up a few months to 18
Birthdate/Sign: July 30, 1994; Leo
Tattoo: The ♌ symbol, on her chest two inches from her left collarbone and a little down and to the left (the general area where she keeps her pins on her green jacket). About an inch in diameter.
Suitability: The age-up is only about four months, but beyond that, even though Chie isn’t experienced with sex, she definitely thinks about it. She just would prefer not to do it with anyone unless she really, truly cared about them. Like a lot of the girls in Persona 4 canon, there were a few points where she thought she might feel that way about the protagonist. For a while, she arguably harbored a crush on him. She’s definitely capable of thinking about sexual relationships. In fact, if you choose to date her in the game and spend time with her on Christmas Eve, it’s highly suggested she and the protagonist have sex.
Beyond sex, Chie spent an entire year caught up trying to solve a murder mystery. She’s used to hardships, battle, and even sacrifice by now. Though her personality can come across as immature at times, Chie handles responsibility well. She’s very determined to save everyone who got thrown into the TV world, despite the dangers to herself and her friends. She was equally determined to make sure Izanami’s fog would never come again. This fog, if left unchecked, would have shrouded the world in darkness and merged the shadow-filled TV word with the human world, essentially turning people into mindless, thoughtless shadows.
Through these events and also her social link (mentioned below in the personality section), Chie was able to greatly mature. There’s a big difference between the normal schoolgirl Chie at the start of the game (April 2011) and the determined, fiercely protective Chie at the game’s true ending (March 2012), and that difference is seen thanks to the events that occurred in that year of her life. The ups and downs of trying to save people from certain death, catch a killer, and also face her hidden, true self through her shadow made Chie into a stronger person, someone who will face hardship with a brave face, even if she’s scared, and also someone who will not hesitate to fight for what she believes is right and just.
Power: At her canon point, Chie will have attained her final persona, Suzuka Gongen (
http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/Suzuka_Gongen), and all of that persona’s skills. The skill I’d like her to take in to Zodion is Agneyastra. In the game, this skill deals heavy physical damage 1-3x to all foes on the field. The animation used for it appears to be flaming meteors falling onto the enemy at a cost of 24% of Chie’s HP. This skill is highly appropriate, since Suzuka Gongen focuses mainly on physical attacks, and also because of Chie’s zodiac sign, Leo, being a fire sign. It incorporates physical damage plus fire.
If this skill is too powerful, it can be ranked down in effectiveness by making the flaming meteors flaming rocks of a smaller size, one foot in diameter or less as opposed to what appear to be several foot-diameter meteors. Of course, using this skill in succession will cause Chie to weaken, and using it more than four times without healing will cause her to pass out entirely.
In case Agneyastra is too powerful, even scaled back as I mentioned, alternatively I could have her bring in a similar power, Heat Wave. This attack deals moderate physical damage to all foes at a cost of 16% of Chie’s HP in the form of a wave of what appears to be fire spreading across the battlefield.
Personality:
Chie, at first glance, seems to be a very outgoing, friendly, outspoken, and enthusiastic girl. She also seems pretty tomboyish and appears to have an obsession with kung-fu movies, steak, and gossip. She’s the first person to reach out to the protag, and sees no problem with asking him to spend the afternoon with her and Yukiko. She also shows her rather short temper early on when Yosuke breaks one of her favorite DVDs and she delivers him a “critical hit to the nads”.
Watching kung-fu movies has given her a strong desire to learn the art and emulate her heroes. She, more than most if not all of the others her the Investigation Team, was probably the most experienced in fighting and self-defense before the investigation began, thanks to her training.
All of this is evident before Chie faces her shadow, but once she meets her shadow another side to her is revealed and later expanded upon in her Chariot social link. This is a side to Chie that is painfully insecure, and reveals that she isn’t convinced of her own worth unless her best friend Yukiko is there, relying on her. She feels that Yukiko is so smart, so feminine, and so much prettier than her, but as long as someone like that is relying on her, she can feel somehow superior to Yukiko. Her own self-confidence is given a boost thanks to the way someone she sees as better than her in all of these ways needs her. Her shadow says she will never let Yukiko go for this reason.
However, though this is true, it doesn’t mean Chie doesn’t value Yukiko as a friend. She certainly does care about her a great deal, enough to risk her own safety and forge on ahead in Yukiko’s dungeon. Even after her shadow is defeated and she gains her persona, leaving her feeling exhausted, she insists on continuing to find her friend, to tell her that the only reason she’s able to be strong around Yukiko is because of the boost in self-confidence she gets when she’s around her best friend. It’s because of Yukiko she’s able to be strong.
What Chie really wants is to be able to protect people - not just her friends, either, but anyone in need of help. Chie needs to be needed and relied upon. In her social link, she and the protag help stomp out a bunch of high schoolers bullying people in the shopping district - first an old friend of Chie’s, then an innocent young boy. These events, plus the events of the investigation, help her to realize that though she still may not recognize what her own good points are, she does truly want to use her power and all her abilities to protect people. At the normal ending, she even reveals that she’ll be training to become a police officer in order to protect her friends, family, and the rest of her hometown from future threats.
A desire to protect people and a certain amount of bravery doesn’t mean that Chie is beyond feeling fear or worry, however. Sometimes when things get rough or difficult or she gets overly worried, she will panic or even cry. Most of the time she seems to get over this fairly quickly, however.
Another thing to mention about Chie is her intelligence, or in some cases lack thereof. She’s shown to be a pretty terrible student, failing a few of her classes at any given time and requiring a ton of help studying before each exam. She isn’t by any means stupid, though. Her book-smarts leave a lot to be desired, but she can be very intuitive when it comes to solving mysteries. Often in the game she will voice a new breakthrough in the case, a new way of looking at the facts, and then follow that up with self-consciously second-guessing the accuracy of her idea. Even when she’s putting two and two together in a logical way, she doesn’t realize it and seems surprised when people agree with her interpretation of the facts.
Chie’s major arcana is that of the Chariot. The Chariot is seen to be a card associated heavily with ideals such as victory, motivation, honor, and discipline, among several others. These are ideals that Chie definitely embodies. Her determination in battle, her self-discipline which allowed her to learn and practice her kung-fu skills, her positivity and insistence that the team keep motivated despite the odds, and her strong sense of honor and commitment to justice that she sees through to the end of the case and beyond when she reveals she wants to join the police… all of these attributes, Chie shares with her associated major arcana.
Also, Chie is a terrible cook. Watch out for Mystery Food X 2.0, Zodion.

[ The feed focuses in on a petite teenage girl, sitting seemingly in the middle of nowhere, though those familiar with the area may notice the surround scenery resembles that near the Luminar. She’s got one hand propping her head up and looks pretty tired and a little beat up. Also, kind of pissed. ]
So… is this the afterlife? Funny, I had no idea you got a tattoo once you die, my mom would probably freak out. She hates tattoos.
[ She smiles slightly. ] Aaaanyway, this place doesn’t look that bad, I guess? For heaven, I mean. Nice welcome letter, fresh air, no fog in sight… much better than the TV world. But jeez… there really is a whole lot of nothing here, isn’t there? And a whole lot of questions. What’s worshipping? What’s this task? Why is heaven called “Zodion”?
[ A short, moderately frustrated sigh. ] Wow, I feel like a tool asking this, but hey, why not? Um… is anyone I know also here? Anyone from Inaba? Grandma Akiko? Great Uncle Ryoichi? [ …she doesn’t want to mention her friends, though they’re more on her mind right now than her dead relatives. ]
Um… and where exactly do I go from here? Aren’t there supposed to be pearly gates somewhere? Shouldn’t I have sprouted angel wings? Oh… or maybe the tattoo lets you fly? Is that it? [ She looks down with some curiosity at her chest, where the tattoo had appeared, before smiling sheepishly and turning the feed off after one more quick, nervous statement: ] Anyway, let me know - that is, if anyone is even listening!
"Zodionlogs" Third-Person Prose Entry:
She’d totally expected to die. And really? If she had, that would’ve been okay. To die defending Inaba, and all of humankind from future harm brought about thanks to Izanami and the fog… that wasn’t a bad way to go at all. To die defending one of her best friends in battle, too - that made it almost poetic.
Thus it was a surprise, to say the least, when Chie found herself not experiencing peaceful oblivion or seeing pearly gates, clouds, and rainbows similar to the ones they’d seen in Nanako’s dungeon, but instead she seemed to be outside a temple of some sort. Stone pillars and what appeared to be an altar surrounded by a ring of clear water was the first thing she noticed, but then she looked around and saw trees, grass, and bushes.
Chie gradually stood up on her feet, her brows knitted in confusion and a hint of pain - she hadn’t escaped that battle unscathed by a long shot. Looking down, she still wore her school uniform, jacket, and her greaves. Weren’t you supposed to wear togas when you reached heaven…? Kind of like the angels in old paintings?
Her gaze wandered back to the altar, just a few feet away, and she found herself drawn inexplicably to a small, glowing box set atop the stone. Should she go grab it? Why not… she was already dead, wasn’t she? Nothing could really hurt her or go wrong at this point. Maybe the box was important.
She took a few slow, hesitant steps to the altar, forgetting completely about the ring of water surrounding it until she had stepped over it with both feet. She was just about to raise one shaky hand up to grab the box when she jumped! The water had risen up, mirroring her wide-eyed expression. The hand that had been about to touch the box on the stone alter instead jerked instinctively to her chest, right above her left breast. It felt like one of her pins had violently poked her through her jacket, only much more intense.
Wincing, she looked up again and couldn’t stop a startled “Ah!” from escaping her lips.
She was naked! Why was she naked?! Oh jeez, oh jeez… she moved to cover herself up, but startlingly, it was just her reflection, not her true body that was naked. “What on earth…”
And there, right where she’d felt that sharp, stinging pain a moment before, was the faintest orange-tinted symbol. It looked like a tattoo, though it glowed faintly with an unnatural sheen… Chie’s reflection showed her open-mouthed confusion as she stepped closer to the reflective water to examine it. The symbol looked vaguely familiar, but she couldn’t quite place it.
Wait… was that same symbol on her real body, too? She unzipped her jacket and pulled the collar of her uniform down, and sure enough… “What the hell… what is this?”
Was this really heaven? Was she really dead? She had to be. That curse had a distinctly lethal air about it, that she knew. If this wasn’t the afterlife, then what else could it possibly be? And yet, Chie felt that those kinds of wishy-washy answers simply were not good enough. Frowning deeply, she looked back to the altar only to notice that the box there was no longer glowing. With a deep, frustrated sigh, Chie grabbed it and opened it.
An iPhone was inside, along with a letter. A letter and an iPhone… “Ooookay…”
Weird, but she could run with it. Upon opening and reading the letter, Chie’s confusion deepened even further. She glared around and called out to no one in particular, “Okay, but what’s Zodion? Is it heaven or not? And what are “The Twelve”? What task? Jeez, this is frustrating!”
Even in the afterlife, apparently you didn’t learn the answer to life, the universe, and everything. There were still a million questions and no immediate answers. Chie grabbed the iPhone device and stalked off with it. She’d find the answers, somehow.
