Or more accurately I attempted to. Please keep in mind I am not making commentary on the man himself as I really know very little about him and this movie failed to arouse any interest in educating myself on the subject. I hated the movie, although the ending was really sad. I've just never been involved in that culture. I don't want to be either.

I haven't seen it yet, but I suspect that I would enjoy the movie precisely because it protrays Milk as being an obnoxious, power-hungry man -- but one who accomplished something important. Like a lot of successful politicians, Milk was ambitious, and probably not always very likeable.

I did enjoy Randy Shilts' biography of him (The Mayor of Castro Street), which I read back in 1991. It's a more complete picture of the man, and the world that he occupied.

I can understand how you saw it that way, but I thought it was a more complicated portrayal. It showed him as a flawed human being, but a martyr as well. Whatever your opinion of the man, he DID help pave the way for the progress we've seen today.

I thought the film was well-done, and impacted heterosexuals who saw it.
