Further progress
I realize I should wait until things dry completely before making decisions, but I am way too impatient, and it's rare I have this kind of free time. Here it is basically dry (dry to the touch) but I realize it might look a little different (better) in a couple hours.
Here is red using glitter paint, instead of metallic paint.
The red in the middle is the one I painted (hopefully you can tell that)

Again, it looks better when a light is shining right on it (the room I'm doing this has no direct light on the shorts). I REALLY appreciate the feedback everyone has given both here and on IM. Thank you!
