It was nothing new to either of them, just a feverish emotion conveyed through small touches. It started in public, Jubilee’s fingers straying far too long over Kitty’s as she passed the Playstation controller over to her or Kitty pressing much to close against Jubilee’s back as she showed the Asian American how to do something on the computer.

They were paying too much attention to the little things that no one else noticed-the curl of Kitty’s fingers against Jubilee’s as the controller was passed over and the small hitch in Jubilee’s breath as Kitty pressed the entirety of her body against Jubilee.

They had always reached out for something concrete to hold onto. The only thing new about it was that it was another person and they needed each other. It didn’t matter, in that moment, that they would go beyond the public displays of affection covered by Jubilee’s street smarts and Kitty’s intelligence. All that mattered was that they needed the small touches, the contact, someone else realizing they were there.

“We won’t be the toothless old couple spending our last years together,” Jubilee said suddenly one night, breaking the magic Kitty had been feeling, the other woman’s naked warm body against hers contact she craved and couldn’t deny that she needed. The last thing she wanted to do was talk right now and especially talk about the future. She snuggled closer to Jubilee, sighing softly, not wanting to say anything, and hoping that if she was silent, the other woman wouldn’t continue her train of thought.

“I mean, even if we get to be that old,” Jubilee continued. “It seems we’re more likely to die, taking the fact that we’re putting our lives at stake at least three times a week. And I’m not counting the Danger Room.”

Death wasn’t something Kitty wanted to talk about right now. Death was one of the reasons she was in Jubilee’s bed and now the guilt was building up. Guilt was something Kitty was good at, and guilt was something Jubilee was used to alleviate. But with this talk, she was only bringing it to the forefront, the other woman’s body feeling cold and unreceptive. She wouldn’t be in Jubilee’s bed if Colossus hadn’t died. She wouldn’t be here if she didn’t crave contact so badly, afraid that she was going to die before she actually felt anything.

So what was this about?

“But even if we do survive that long,” Jubilee continued, Kitty just wanting her to stop, finish, not even come to the point that their relationship was a farce, a coming-together between relationships, “eventually you’ll find someone else to fill that gap in your life. And I’ll be left alone again.”

Kitty knew what the proper thing to say was. The proper thing to do was to reassure the other woman that she wouldn’t leave Jubilee alone-that wasn’t the way it was. But it was true that she was using Jubilee in a sense, but Jubilee was using her as well. Everything they had ever done-it was all so they could feel, have human contact that wasn’t stale, but was fresh.

Was that the problem? Was this growing old for Jubilee? She didn’t want to lie to the woman. She knew that would be even worse than her silence, her utter silence that seemed to fill the room. She had to say something, but she didn’t want to lie and she didn’t want to tell Jubilee, yes, it’s all true.

“Maybe we will die in each other’s arms,” she said, burying her face into Jubilee’s shoulder so she couldn’t see the tears forming silently in the corners of her eyes. “We risk our lives so often, that maybe, just maybe we’ll be mortally wounded together and that will be the end. There won’t be any confessions of love, but there will be tears shed. For the same reason we don’t make it public that we’re seeing each other-because while we may be seeing each other, we’re not dating. It’s a question of truth. Our relationship, if you can call it that, isn’t one that’s going to last forever. I mean, even if we were openly dating and were the perfect couple and didn’t have our own ulterior motives-the truth is… people our age don’t last forever.”

Jubilee was stunned by Kitty’s candidness, and could feel the warm tears against her neck. She didn’t understand all the words Kitty had used but she could feel the emotion behind them. Kitty Pryde needed Jubilation Lee right now just as much as Jubes needed Kitten.

Maybe they didn’t love each other. Maybe they wouldn’t spend the rest of their lives together. But they needed moments like this, chances to touch and be touched, simply so they could continue on living.

And eventually be there for someone else; so they could be that toothless old couple spending their last years together, even if that toothless old couple wasn’t them, but with another.

Prompt: 003 Shiny from femslash50
Word Count: 779

Jubilee had seen the ring. She didn’t know where the Russian had gotten the money for it, but every time she saw Kitty, she saw the glitter of the diamond. And the shine in Kitty’s eyes. Her bed felt cold now, whenever she lay down in it. But maybe it wasn’t the bed.

She wasn’t sure how many years passed with Kitty wearing that ring. One, two? But the shine in her eyes was slowly dissipating, and the wedding date was always scheduled far off. She hadn’t made any arrangements.

Kitty’s parents were against the wedding-Piotr was an atheist and they wanted him converted before the wedding, but Kitty’s rabbi refused to convert anyone just for marriage reasons. He wanted real faith. But Piotr wasn’t the kind to jump for faith. Even if it was for Kitty.

The first thing Jubilee noticed was the shine, completely gone from Kitty’s eyes, the dull area left only, like when she had thought Colossus was dead. She didn’t even notice the ring was gone until Kitty grasped her hand, and as Jubilee stroked her left palm she didn’t feel the cool metal of the ring against her fingers.

“You gave it back,” Jubilee said.

“No,” Kitty said hoarsely, wrapping her arms around Jubilee, her fingers tangling in the back of Jubilee’s shirt. “He took it back.”

“What happened?” Jubilee asked, obviously shocked. Kitty swallowed hard, not wanting to talk for a while.

“Can we go to your room to talk about it?” she managed after a few moments, looking up at Jubilee with freshly tear-stained eyes. No, her eyes hadn’t been puffy with tears when Jubilee had seen her earlier and here eyes weren’t red like she had been crying. The tears had only started now.

“Sure,” Jubilee said, wrapping an arm around Kitty’s waist as she walked her to her room.

“If-if we were going to get married,” Kitty nearly hiccupped once she was sat down on Jubilee’s bed, “I didn’t want any secrets between us. We’d been separated so long and once he was back, I was sure everything would be the same and though it was awkward at first, I was sure I still loved him and I did everything in my power to make sure we could be together again. And you know Piotr… he’s a bit of a prude, you might say…”

“Prude?” Jubilee asked. “How’d you find the key to his chastity belt?”

Kitty smiled softly, having missed Jubilee’s irreverent humor. “I felt… that if we were going to get married, and it was taking so long, we might as well… sleep together.”

Jubilee nodded slowly, stroking Kitty’s hair. “It hurt,” she said softly. “I… I told him to stop.”

Jubilee seemed surprised. Kitty was very… stretchable. She of all people should know that. But she let Kitty continue, not interrupting her. “So we lay together for a while, and he asked me what had happened while he was gone. Had I seen anyone? I remembered his reaction to Pete Wisdom and I was quiet for a moment, but that was enough for him to be able to tell that yes, I had been seeing someone. He asked me who I had been seeing, and I told him the truth, though I hadn’t really been seeing you, it was more of an arrangement…”

She stared off into space for a moment. “He pulled on his boxers, obviously upset. Not really that I had ‘cheated’ on him, per se-we all thought he was dead-but he said slowly, ‘You love her.’”

“I tried to deny it. I really did.” There were tears in Kitty’s eyes again, and Jubilee held her close. “We didn’t have the kind of relationship where someone falls in love with the other. It was about the sex-the contact. That was all it was about… but it wasn’t…”

Jubilee wiped Kitty’s tears away silently. “I haven’t touched you since he came back, but you’re all I think about, Jubes,” Kitty said, swallowing hard. “And I guess he could tell.”

Jubilee sighed. Kitty knew she was seeing someone else, that this couldn’t work, but then again, when had it worked? It wasn’t ever supposed to work. It was just something temporary, a relief.

“I’m not going to let go,” Jubilee said eventually, not one for sappy comments. “I mean, for a middle-class Jewish girl from Deerfield, Illinois, you’ve lost a lot. I’m not going to take anything more away from you.”

She didn’t say she was going to stop dating or that she loved the girl, but it was enough to calm Kitty’s sobs. “Thank you,” she said softly. “Thank you.”

Prompt: 004 Routine from femslash50
Word Count: 229

For being in a school full of telepaths, Kitty and Jubilee weren’t very secretive about their relationship. But if they had been anywhere else, their routine would have been baffling. And those who figured it out knew better than to say anything.

It would start at lunch. Jubilee would sit with Kitty for about five minutes, wolfing down her food as Kitty carefully picked apart her meal. Once she had finished, she would ask Kitty what she was studying today. Kitty would always answer truthfully what class she was studying that Jubilee was also in. Then Jubilee would ask if she was studying in the library or the gardens.

It seemed honest enough. Kitty would tell the truth-library or gardens. But once the lights were shut out, the routine came to its end. If they had studied together in the library, Jubilee would sneak down the hall, knowing very well how to keep out of sight from her earlier days, and make her way to Kitty’s room. On the other hand, if they had studied in the gardens, Kitty would put her slippers on and phase quickly into Jubilee’s room. It was a simple routine, and almost perfect. The only thing they had forgotten about was the fact that they were in a school full of telepaths with the head of the school being one of the strongest.

Title: Nothing Would Change

Prompt: 005 Surprise from femslash50
Word Count: 361

The words were a complete surprise to Kitty. The girl thought she had everyone understood. She thought that raw intelligence itself could keep her from being put in such an awkward position. It had been three months since Piotr had left her and she had come sobbing to Jubilee. Three months. She assumed nothing would change.

There would be no sex, just contact. They would hold each other, and Jubilee, like always would comfort her in the only way she knew how. There would be no kisses. Jubilee would just give her what she needed, nothing more, nothing less.

“I broke up with Mark,” Jubilee told Kitty over lunch, twirling her macaroni and cheese with her fork. That was nothing new. How many boyfriends had Jubilee gone through since she had been dumped by Piotr? Four? Seemed right.

“Bored of him?” Kitty asked, not really feeling hungry.

“Yeah, you could say that,” Jubilee said vaguely, sniffing at the milk she had grabbed accidentally. “I meant to get juice…”

“If you want to say something,” Kitty said, rolling her eyes, “You should come out and say it.”

“I broke up with Mark because I want to date someone else,” Jubilee said, more strain in her voice than necessary for the vague comment.

No surprise there. Jubilee’s love interests always seemed to be varied, and she rarely dated anyone long enough for them to die on her. It was a constant fear, Kitty knew. Kitty didn’t say anything, just waiting for Jubilee to come out with it. She finally brought her fork up to her mouth to taste the macaroni and cheese, but Jubilee pulled her close, kissing her. No, not just kissing her, but kissing her in the middle of the lunch hall.

Kitty pulled back, panting, her mouth smeared with the pasty cheese they had soaked the noodles in. She was shocked, surprised. Jubilee had to be messing with her, but as surprised as she was with this development, she knew that Jubilee was being utterly serious. The only thing that pained her was she didn’t know how long she’d be the interesting one.

How long until Jubilee would leave her?
