There was no question to her. She had been asked, many times, how she could hold on so dearly to something she couldn't touch, and she'd just smile, looking down, not knowing what to say. Perhaps she had gotten her faith from her grandfather and the trials he went through, or perhaps it was just something ingrained in her as she grew up. But either way, she undoubtedly believed in the existence of God, and when she exalted him in temple, she felt something inside of her that just felt right.
It must have been one of the older students (they all seemed older to her sometimes) who asked her once again, how she could cling to a notion that she couldn't see, couldn't touch. She reached out for the boy's hand and watched her own slip through it. She just smiled and shrugged, walking away. Maybe, just maybe, her faith was tied into her own blood-her need for an explanation, an understanding of herself.

She laughed when she first saw it, tucking the prop onto her belt. "Wow, what a wonderful birthday present," she said, rolling her eyes. "I hope there are some handcuffs to go with it." She was barely wearing anything, just a pair of lacy hot shorts and a decorated bra, and there was something amazing about the black outfit accentuated with that black whip. Of course there were handcuffs. And not that fuzzy kind, either. It looked like Pete had gotten her genuine police handcuffs. She grinned ear-to-ear.
Pete Wisdom just licked his lips. "Happy birthday, Kitten," he said. "It's a terrible birthday present, isn't it? Perhaps you should punish me…"
His comment was just responded to with a click, the handcuffs securing his wrists behind his back, keeping him on his knees. "Happy birthday indeed…"
Title: Paradoxical Fears

Theme: #18 Doctor from

She came from a middle class Jewish family, and before she had come to the Mansion, her parents had expected that she would become a doctor with all her smarts. Kitty Pryde, however, had refused medical school, even from a young age, giving no reason.
She was always lucky when it came to getting scrapes and broken bones. In the fact that she never did. And her immune system was almost perfect, so she never had more than a common cold. Katherine Anne Pryde never had never gone to the doctor since she was 12, getting the last of her vaccinations.
When she was nineteen, however, Ororo sat her down. They were close friends, and all of the people who cared about her had convened, trying to figure out who would be the one to talk to her.
"You need to see the gynecologist if you're sexually active," Ororo said, sighing softly, gauging Kitty's reaction. The girl's face was serious, her mind trying to find any excuse to keep her from seeing a doctor. "Why are you so afraid of doctors?" Ororo asked, having noticed the fear and her refusal to even get a checkup at a normal doctor.
"…I just want them not to… know," Kitty said, looking down. "And whenever… something frightens me, I phase. So… I'm afraid that if I go to the doctor…"
Ororo sighed, understanding the girl's logic entirely, but also knowing that she needed to go to the gynecologist. "Well, if you aren't afraid, they won't find out, right? It's a bit paradoxical… you're afraid of the doctor and so you won't go because when you're afraid, you phase…"
Kitty saw her logic and laughed, though the laughter was strained. "I just want to seem normal…" she murmured.
"You're not the only one," Ororo answered, though she wasn't speaking about herself. "If someone, a close friend, went with you, do you think you wouldn't be as scared? I can even tell you everything that's going to happen…"
Kitty swallowed hard and nodded, holding Ororo close to her. "You've always been there for me," she whispered, almost feeling guilty.

He wasn't actually one of those raving psychos on the side of the street telling everyone that God is coming after you, she noted, seeing the pious man slowly cleaning up the outside of his church.
"What happened?" she asked, just noticing the mess.
He smiled weakly and eyed the eggshells, toilet paper, and firecracker remains. "I just feel blessed it wasn't real bombs. Our church has been a real controversy lately…"
"How so?" she asked, feeling for the holy man.
He sighed. "We're letting mutants into our church," he retorted, his tone making it clear that there was no reason to deny them. "They're all God's children. All of them."
She smiled to herself. "Let me help you clean up, Father…"
"Father Benjamin," he said. "I'm the Priest here, and it's sweet to see a Jewish girl caring so much for a Catholic church that's been attacked by apparently immature teenagers."
She realized he must have seen the Star of David around her neck and shook her head. "No, this isn't a Jewish girl helping a Catholic Priest," she said. "It's one of God's children helping out another who was attacked, just for doing the right thing. Good Samaritan, you could call me."
"A Good Samaritan indeed," the priest laughed, cleaning alongside her.

"It… was all in good intention," Kitty said, her face streaked with blood now mixing with tears. She knew the cliché-the path to hell is paved with good intentions, but she didn't believe in hell, just doing the thing you think is right. "All I want is for everyone… to recognize everyone else's worth. To see beyond genetics and see the character of the soul. I guess it sounds like I'm working for world peace…"
She sighed, mopping blood off of her face. "But in the end, fighting for peace… it just never works. No matter how pure the intention."

Theme: #21 Calm from

Breathe in. She closed her eyes, ignoring the pain, trying to focus on the nothing she had found before. She was calm, blank, working on feeling nothing, remembering what she had been told in Japan and simply adhering to it… but her thoughts came rolling back, destroying the sanctuary she had created in her own mind. She tried again, trying to find that spark of energy in her, connecting the different points of her body and allowing it balance, trying to find where the imbalance was. The pain shot starkly through the effort and she started crying, clutching her broken heart. If she couldn't run and she couldn't hide within the sanctuary of her mind, where else was there to go?

Theme: #22 Charity from
x_men100Word Count: 122
She always gave anonymously. No matter how much she gave. If her name had to be attached to the donation, she just smiled and shook her head, refusing to give the money. There was something wrong, in her opinion, of flaunting the donations you've made. And all it means is that the charity, the money you gave for someone else, ends up owing you. So when her research was done and she had found the true genome, the tracer she was looking for, she slipped it into the mailbox of the United People of the World, hoping the pro-mutant group would know what to do with it. She didn't need the money or the fame. She just wanted to see people benefit.

"Katya, you're so beautiful," Piotr said one night, and she swallowed hard, pulling a sheet up her naked body, suddenly feeling open, exposed. Piotr frowned, wondering what he had done wrong and wrapped his arms around the suddenly frigid girl, kissing the back of her neck. "It was just a compliment, Katya…"
"I know," she said softly. "But… I always wonder, when someone tells me I'm beautiful if it is the love that clouds their eyes, or if my own eyes are clouded to see something plain."
Piotr was quiet for just a moment. "I'd say both," he compromised, happy to feel her warmth against his body, tired from their love-making. "Because I love you more than anything, and you always have this habit of finding everything that isn't perfect about you."
She blushed softly. "I love you, too."

Theme: #24 Enemies from

Surprisingly enough, Kitty found it hard to make real enemies. She annoyed a lot of people and some people despised her for being smarter than her, but she found that she couldn't hate anyone, no matter how hard she tried. It was her fatal flaw-love. She craved to touch, find contact in the world, and above all, she craved someone reaching out to her, making her feel real and reminding her that this isn't just a step on the way to death.
Creating enemies only separated her from others, and the truth was, she just wanted everyone to get along.

"I'm leaving," Kitty said, snuggling up against Jubilee. "I have to go. I can't stay here anymore."
Jubilee sighed, the only word she could think of coming to her lips, "Again?"
There was something different about Kitty, something none of them could possibly understand. She didn’t run away from the mansion when she ran away, she left with permission. She had places she was going. She was worthy to other people. Kitty was always leaving, doing something important.
"When will you come back?" Jubilee asked.
"I don't know if I will," Kitty said, trying to will those tears away, wanting nothing more than to be able to say goodbye without crying.
Jubilee wiped her tears away, leaning in and kissing her sensually. "Then this is the last night we have together," she murmured, stroking Kitty's long brown hair.
'Don't think of it that way!' Kitty wanted to say, but just succumbed to Jubilee's touches, kisses. For all she knew, she wasn't coming back. She needed a break. For a moment, she pondered asking Jubilee to come with her, but she knew the girl could never say yes to that. Tears started flowing down her face again, but Jubilee just accepted them.
They were part of who Kitty was. Just like her leaving.
