On first viewing, what struck me was the naturalism of HL's performance as the make-up melts away. (I've known a lot of psychotics.) I'll have to double check that impression on another viewing.
I hate to see a drug overdose be the occasion for a cult. But he did have talent, and it is so sad...

I didn't find the character of the Joker initially with all of his wild blood-covered make-up as disturbing as the later scenes when the make-up had all washed off and he was actually recognisable as Heath.
It was a tragedy, and the thought that the role contributed to the dark place he was in before his death is a very strange and sad one (for lack of better words).
