“Untitled”
It was with a feeling of dread that Giles approached the table, not knowing what kind of mood she would be in. He sat his tray down as quietly as possible on the table while asking in a voice devoid of emotion. “Is this seat empty?”
Without looking up at him, Buffy stabbed an innocent potato with a tad bit more force than necessary, and Giles winced in sympathy. She finally scowled up at him and said with a sneer in her voice. “Yes, and mine will be too if you sit down.”
Giles sighed heavily as he pinched his nose. “Buffy, please-“
She raised a hand in the air to cut him off and nodded towards the empty seat in front of her. “Fine. Sit. No speaking allowed.”
He nodded, grateful that she realized how imperative it was to make an appearance of normalcy between them in front the others. Both sat in silence while shifting the food around on their plates, avoiding each others’ eyes. Finally Giles couldn’t take it anymore and forced himself to address what had been on his mind since his talk with Evelyn.
He cleared his throat to get her attention, but almost changed his mind when her hard accusing eyes met his. “B-Buffy, I have to ask, last night, we didn’t-.“ He looked away in order to finish. “Um, use anything. What if..” He trailed off with an embarrassed glance.
It took a few seconds before Buffy realized what he was trying to say, and when she did, she looked down at her plate as color flooded her face. “Don’t worry about, ok?” She whispered fiercely.
Giles furrowed his brow. “Don’t worry about it?” He parroted back. “Buffy, we need to talk about-“
“Giles!” She hissed, wary of the increasing pair of eyes directed at them. “I’m on the pill, alright? Now drop it! The End!”
Now a red glow was sporting both their faces, and they starred at the food in front of them for several uncomfortably minutes. Buffy suddenly giggled and said casually. “Brings a whole new meaning to the word pregnant pause huh?”
Giles tried his damndest not to laugh, but it was so typically her to say something so inappropriate at uncomfortable times like this. Within seconds he was shaking with laughter, and everyone in the dining hall seemed to freeze and gawk at his unprecedented emotional display.
“Muted Afterglow”
Suddenly realizing what he was doing, Giles pulled away from her lips and released his hold on her. “God, I don’t know what came over me, please forgive me.” He had a distraught expression on his face, and was avoiding eye contact.
Buffy was shaking from the emotional onslaught, not aware that she was touching her lips with her fingers as if she could memorizing his taste. She was tempted to tell him everything, and had to fight herself to not make him remember what they had shared. Before she had a chance to say anything the door to the training room opened and the others entered while chatting noisily. As if nothing had happened, she picked up her staff from the floor and got into position. Really what she wanted to do was just lie down and cry. The emotional aftermath of the past days was catching up with her fast, and the kiss they had just shared was the final straw.
Giles could tell she was distracted as they continued their training, and knew full well what had caused it. The kiss had been unnerving. It had carried with it a sense of familiarity he could not understand. And the worst part was that he so desperately wanted to kiss her again. He had always prided himself on the fact that he managed to hide his feelings for her, but these last days he seemed to have lost all control and he hated himself for it.
As Buffy once again dropped her guard, Giles’ frustration reached its breaking point, and he snapped. “Buffy! Concentrate!”
The harsh tone of Giles’ voice was her undoing. With a growl she swiped the staff at his feet and knocked him on his back. With a sob she dropped to her knees and covered her face as tears spilled down her cheek. She’d had it.
“While You Were Gone”
Both approached the door with slow steps, drawing out the last moment together. Buffy turned nervously towards him when they reached the door and rested a hand on his chest. “I really don’t know how I am going to do without you for the next six weeks.”
Giles brushed his hand over her hair, his feelings a mirror picture of hers. “I know.” He murmured softly.
“But this is such a wonderful experience for you, Buffy. And before you know it, you’ll be back home.”
Buffy nodded slowly, not entirely convinced, but knowing deep down how right he was. She plastered a smile on her face and checked her watch. “Ok, I got to go.” She looked into Giles’ eyes and felt a pain in her heart at the thought of leaving him. Without another word she hugged him tightly, tucking her face into his neck, taking a deep breath.
Giles immediately wrapped his arms around her and lightly graced his lips against her temple. “Have a safe trip, Buffy.”
When she pulled back their eyes met, and the all familiar sexual tension between them ignited yet again. Buffy realized she had to know. There was no way she was the only one feeling this, and she would be damned if she left without doing something about it.
Taking a deep breath, she rose on her toes and placed her lips gently against his. For a few seconds he seemed frozen, and Buffy was ready to withdraw in humiliation when Giles suddenly responded. His arms tightened around her, and he tilted his head to deepen the kiss. Buffy felt his tongue brush the seam of her mouth, and with a moan she parted her lips, granting him entry.
A sudden knock on the door drew them hastily apart, and both stared at each other as if they could not believe what had just happened. Giles opened his mouth to speak, when the knocking continued and he gave Buffy an apologetic smile as he opened the door.
Willow came rushing into the house while talking a mile a minute. Oblivious to the fact that Buffy was standing by the door she paced the floor like an automated vacuum cleaner on crack. “I can’t find Buffy! I have been looking everywhere for her and silch, nada, poof, she is all gone. And she’s not even packed, and we are leaving so early tomorrow. You don’t think she’s changed her mind do you, Giles? I mean, you think she still wants to go right?”
“I’m sure, Willow.” Buffy said with a grin, bringing her friend to a halt.
“Buffy!” Willow exclaimed and rushed over and started dragging a reluctant Buffy out the door. “Come on, hurry up, we have tons to do. Bye bye, Giles, see you in six weeks.”
Slightly stunned, still reeling from Buffy’s kiss, Giles only raised his hand and waved, murmuring a weak goodbye in return. With a sigh he closed the door, wondering how the hell he was going to make the next six weeks pass. He jumped when his front door suddenly opened, and a smile spread across his face as Buffy came through the door.
She gave him a quick hug and gave him a soft kiss on the cheek before murmuring into his ear. “See you in six weeks, Giles.” As fast as she came, she was out the door, leaving Giles standing in the middle of his living room with his hand against his cheek.
